As soon as the automobile was developed towards the end of the 19th Century, the first things engineers and enthusiasts alike wanted to do was to go quicker. Chevrolet emerged as a car brand using the name of Louis Chevrolet, a well-known car racing driver of the early 20th Century. Chevrolet as a car brand grew from a racing pedigree into the well-known car marquee we know today. This development is echoed by all the well-known car brands we know today Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, the Ford Mustangs (especially the Shelbys) all of these owe their existence to the racing pedigrees established by racing. While the race car of yesterday and today are not suitable for everyday use, some of the design features were obviously attractive to mainstream consumers. Having a sleek, aerodynamic body shape lends a certain aesthetic but consumers also expected greater performance than a regular production car, not least because they were also looking to race the cars themselves. This brought the need for speed to the mass market, and many notable car racing drivers emerged from the amateur circuits established in Europe and North America. During the 1980s as the Japanese car manufacturers sought to establish a more up market reputation for their cheap car imports, one of the major sales tactics they used was to partner with established racing teams. A multicandidate PAC is a political committee with more than 50 contributors which has been registered for at least 6 months and, with the exception of state party committees, has made contributions to 5 or more candidates for federal office.

For the first time in this rollercoaster of an election period, I am fed up and disgusted. I was able (somehow) to stomach Palin’s “getchas” and “betchas” and McCain’s painfully dull speeches, but I am not able to condone racism.

Let’s be clear — other than referring to Obama as “That one” and releasing an ad associating Obama with a “terrorist”, I do not believe McCain has said overtly racist statements towards Obama (yet, there is such a thing as coded language).

Most disturbing, but, is the recent McCain and Palin rallies in which people have called Obama a “terrorist” and “Obama Bin Laden” and have even been heard shouting “Treason!” and “Kill him!”

Not only is it terrifying to hear someone threatening violence to a Presidential candidate, but considering Barack Obama is the first African-American President, you cannot ignore the racial undertones. In this country, you must keep in mind our history of slavery and Jim Crowism. Less than a century ago it was customary for extremist groups and mobs such as the Ku Klux Klan to terrorize and murder black people. That is one of the first things that comes to mind when I hear someone shout “Kill him!” in reference to Obama.

Racism, both overt and aversive, is systematic and pervasive in our society. Racism and hatred towards black people — Obama in particular — is not “out of the ordinary”.

There have also been some troubling incidents that have come to my attention:

·        An Obama supporter in London was show by a BB-gun at close range because he was wearing an Obama t-shirt and because he was black.

·        A man in Georgia tried to sell t-shirts that depict Barack Obama as Curious George (the monkey starring in beloved children’s books).

·        There is talk of the Bradley Effect, which is when people, worried to seem racist, tell the polls that they are voting for a black candidate but then change their mind in the privacy of the voting booth.

·        In a speech given by John Ashcroft, he (deliberately?) referred to Barack Obama as “Osama”. Politically leanings aside, that’s not politically right.

The racism and personal attacks must stop. By calling him a Muslim and a terrorist, people are associating Barack Obama with “otherness” (nevermind that a) he’s not Muslim b) being Muslim isn’t a terrible thing). People seriously reckon: He’s Muslim — don’t trust him. He’s a “pal” of terrorists — don’t trust him. He’s black — don’t trust him. It’s about time people looked at the facts: Obama is a United States Senator with extensive credentials and a strong educational background. He is an upstanding citizen and a loyal father and husband. Quite frankly, I’ve had enough of ignorant people’s  nonsense to say the least.

S. even though 2004 was the first time a pro competition took place in the States. The sport has been hot for a long time, particularly in other arenas of the globe.   But, as mentioned before, Formula Drifting is growing in fame in the U. S.  A number of different methods are used in drifting. These techniques include an E-Brake Drift, a Braking Drift, a Long Slide Drift and a Kansei Drift.   Here’s a brief explanation of the above mentioned drifting methodologies. While they do look fantastic in writing, they are even greater when seen in live action.  

 You do not want to use The Kansei Drift if your car is neutrally unbalanced.   It is not advisable to use a car that is not – this will result in a failed drift, but it could also be unsafe.   When the right car is used, the driver will take his foot from the car’s accelerator pedal.   This will help produce an over steer, which the racer must negotiate throughout the rest of the high speed corner.  

 A braking drift, unlike the above mentioned Kansei Drift, is most commonly employed in corners that are medium or low speed corners.   When in a low or medium speed corner, a driver will use their tail breaking as soon as they start entering into the corner. This often results in the loss of grip from the car to the tires. To do this drifting technique successfully, like all others, the driver must be able to balance the car through the use of the steering and throttle.

 An E-Brake Drift, is in a sense, similar to the breaking drift mentioned above, but  you can only use it in certain situations. For E-brake maneuvers, drivers use their parking brakes. What it does is make a release of the road grip, which is crucial in drifting. Just like any other maneuver, the drifter has to maintain the car’s ability to make it through the corners with ease even though the loss of traction has occurred.

 

 Everything we described in this article is just a small part of the bag of tricks that pro-drifters deploy on a regular basis. Some other methods that could be used are Dirt drop drift, faint drift, shift lock and faint drift. Nevertheless, in Isaiah 19:25

“The LORD Almighty will bless them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance. ”

This is the only time in the Bible to say “Egypt my people”

It follows that the Bible is very interested in the races of people.

And the two favorite races are Israel (37 times) and Egypt (only once).

On the other hand, the Bible sorts out other races like the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites as inferior. But, the Bible gives no thought about the reason to classify those races like dirt!

Mohammad came with the heavenly Message and declared that no Arab is superior over a non-Arab, and no white is superior over black and superiority is by righteousness and God-fearing alone

This established in the hearts and minds that superiority is not by birth or color or blood, but by Allah-fearing and righteousness.

This is firmly expressed in the Qur’an, when Allah clarifies the reason for our variety as different races and peoples:

“O’ mankind, We have made you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed the most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the one with the most piety”

(The Quran 49:13).

The Prophet (saws) said: “Indeed there is no excellence for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, nor a White person over a Black one, nor a Black person over a White one, except through piety”.

A statement like this tells us that this man, Mohammed, was truly a receiver of heavenly inspiration. His words were not blank like the words of so many leaders today. Rather, he was always the first to lead by example, and this is why we find that during his lifetime so many different types of people accepted Islam. From amongst the Prophet’s friends we find that he had an Ethiopian companion named “Bilal”.

Bilal had been a slave before he accepted Islam, and as a result his position in Arabian society was worse than the animals. But, when he converted to Islam Bilal was given a status like no Black slave had been given before. He was given the immense honor of being the first person to call the “Azan” (call to prayer) in Islam’s magnificent history. More outstandingly but, he was accepted as an equal and a brother by the Prophet and his companions.

Mohammad eradicated the problem of racial or color discrimination so successfully that, for example, “Omar” the second well-known Ruler in Islam once said about Bilal: “Bilal” is our master”

This was one of the reasons of the spread of Islam to every corner of the known world.

Thus Blacks, Whites, Arabs, Indians, Malays and all other races: are truly united by worshipping their Creator. This unity is not only restricted to the prayer, but to the whole of ones life, to the extent that Muslims try to fall under the saying of their beloved Prophet who said:

“The example of the believers in their mutual like and mercy is like the example of a body; if one part of the body feels pain, then all the body suffers in sleeplessness and fever “.

Another observance which has helped so many to eradicate racism from their lives, is the Hajj (pilgrimage to Makka), which is obligatory upon every Muslim at least once in a lifetime. The Hajj brings together the peoples of the world, all at one time of the year, in one place.

The Hajj to “Makka” is an experience to see people belonging to different colors, races and nationalities, kings, heads of states and ordinary men from very poor countries all dressed in simple white sheets praying to Allah without any sense of either pride or inferiority. It is a practical manifestation of the concept of equally in Islam.

Islam and Racism against other religions?

The peoples of other faiths have always loved religious toleration under Islam; when the Jews were being persecuted in the rest of Europe, they found freedom and sanctity in Muslim Spain. Their historians regard that as one of their Golden Eras.

This was due to the Islamic teachings:

“Say: We believe In Allah, and in what Has been revealed to us And what was revealed To Abraham, Ishmael; Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes, And in (the Books) Given to Moses, Jesus, And the Prophets, From their Lord: We make no distinction Between one and another Among them and to God do we Bow our will( in Islam). ”

The Quran 3:84

A statement like this tells us that this man, Mohammed, was truly a receiver of heavenly inspiration. His words were not blank like the words of so many leaders today. Rather, he was always the first to lead by example, and this is why we find that during his lifetime so many different types of people accepted Islam. From amongst the Prophet’s friends we find that he had an Ethiopian companion named “Bilal”.

Bilal had been a slave before he accepted Islam, and as a result his position in Arabian society was worse than the animals. But, when he converted to Islam Bilal was given a status like no Black slave had been given before. He was given the immense honor of being the first person to call the “Azan” (call to prayer) in Islam’s magnificent history. More outstandingly but, he was accepted as an equal and a brother by the Prophet and his companions.

Mohammad eradicated the problem of racial or color discrimination so successfully that, for example, “Omar” the second well-known Ruler in Islam once said about Bilal: “Bilal” is our master”

While many Sierra Leoneans and I naturally disagree on policy grounds and principles with Mr. Margai’s proposals as relates to establishment of a “quota system” for representation in parliament; the role of parties in the selection of such members of parliament and the election of the President by the selected members of parliament, I but welcome the debate his article has and is sure to engender.

In addressing Sierra Leone’s democratic dispensation, Mr. Charles F. Margai, the leader of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC), provides not only an insight into his political thinking of how our “democracy” should evolve and progress but must be commended as a harbinger, if nothing else, for his policy and political thought articulation, which all political leaders must be encouraged to emulate by putting forth creative thoughts and initiatives on policy issues confronting our motherland.

It is but my considered proposal that several alternative measures designed to change the entrenched practices of political parties campaigning methods and tactics need to be addressed by the National Elections Commission (NEC), the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and the Parliament. With a slate of PMDC Members of Parliament and in a coalition with the APC, Mr. Margai would be better able to address the central thesis of his article, the eradication of violence in elections, through the legislative and regulatory processes that the NEC and the PPRC can be made to bear on such an issue rather that dragging the country through a referendum.

Specifically, the practice of very large crowds of party supporters parading down streets of major cities and towns, dancing and provoking opponents with incendiary songs must be banned and relegated to the dustbin of our political history. Throughout our electoral history, this practice has only served as the fuse that has lead to violence during elections. There is really no electoral redeemable value to such public processions and quite frankly very few if any people are swayed by which party or candidate to vote for by such displays.

The tense atmosphere permeating elections that Mr. Margai decries and seeks to eradicate can easily be minimized simply by outlawing the practice of political party rallies on public streets. Political rallies of course can be held in enclosed areas such as stadiums, court barrays and halls and members made to peaceably disperse after such gatherings.

My observations and experiences during the last 2007 elections, where mobs of youths in the use of political parties consistently used the occasion of political rallies to ruin property and met out violence against their opponents, while under the spell of drugs and alcohol, have only served to reinforce the need to ban public political processions. Large scale political intimidations and violence perpetuated against opponents during the electioneering period were all too common spanning the entire length and breath of the country.

The use of the mass media as the primary vehicle and mode of campaigning in elections must be highlighted and effectively utilized by political parties and candidates in future elections. In this regard the use of radio during the 2007 electioneering period shall serve as a model of how local issues can be addressed through the several community radio stations throughout the country. The once single government owned and managed SLBS no longer has a monopoly on radio transmission and ownership in the country. In fact the limited range of the SLBS during the last elections rendered it virtually ineffective, as for example Radio Wanjie in Pujehun was able to provide coverage specifically to the Pujehun electorate.

The establishment of a national TV would also enhance the visual message that political parties and candidates can effectively communicate without the need for the large public street rallies and hence the atmosphere for violence. It is regrettable that after 47 years of monopoly on television rights by the government SLBS, the country except for Freetown has had no television penetration. Efforts in providing private licenses for television transmission throughout the country must be stepped up not only for its entertainment value but to ensure the sustenance of our fledgling democracy.

 Finally, it must be noted that the current system and paradigms underpinning our social, political and economic developmental aspirations have failed and the challenge facing us all is the formulation and expression of alternatives to address policy issues such as violence in the electoral system through the competition of thoughts that would forestall the monopoly of barren and unprogressive political thought and practice that has so far been a hallmark of our political discourse. To this end I applaud the efforts exhibited by Mr. Charles Margai in initiating this debate.

Reflecting upon the “day after” election 2008, I found myself feeling like I was standing between my yesterday life and a vague facsimile of the life I had pre-campaign. I was still; and there was no movement of time. I learned the promises I had made to myself that I would finally clean my house, do the laundry and get the shopping done just after election night, are still left undone. Yet, I mindlessly wander around feeling  an anxiousness, as if I was suppose to be doing something, but there was no motivation to do much of anything.

Over the last year or so my whole body, mind and soul has been focused on one goal; to do everything within my ability to be a part of history and see the first African American be elected as our 44th President of the United States. Now that it is a reality, I am learning I was living an alternate life that finished quite abruptly on November 5th, 2008. The announcement that Barack Obama was the projected winner of the election was such a surreal experience but that event rapidly turned into an abyss of emotions.

Although, a day and night had passed, there seemed to be something going on. I was really mystified by my emotions and behavior, or in my case, the lack of behaviors until this feeling of familiarity bubbled up into my consciousness; I had experienced this before. Some time back, I had volunteered over 100 hours at the 2002 Winter Olympics, and the days following the closing ceremonies of that very meaningful world-wide event, I meandered around my days as if I was in a thick fog, and no matter how much I tried walk around or out of it, the fog continued to wrap around my life.

There had been approximately 25,000 people volunteering for the 2002 Olympics, and most of them were in the same patch of fog that I found myself in. This phenomenon really became a tale in the local news media. The news media dubbed the volunteers’ experience as Post Olympic Blues. I was pessimistic about such a description because I wasn’t feeling depressed, I was feeling like my purpose in life had been ripped right from under my feet.

Since the 2008 election process started, most of us have been living on a constant flow of the hormone adrenaline. This hormone has helped us push our bodies to be super-human by living on small sleep, constantly walking, door knocking, and talking to exhaustion; motivated by the hope that change was on the horizon. After the election, the body no longer needed the constant secretion of adrenaline, and so we soon felt the physical and mental crash that occurs when the body stops producing adrenaline in constant high volumes. This crash most of us experienced is an inventible consequence of a swift transition from high motivation and energy to “nothing. ” The nothing we are experiencing, is the beginning of what can now be known as the “Post Election Trauma Syndrome,” or (PETS).

PETS has similar features to a well-renown concept known as the Kubler-Ross “Five Stages of Grief” model. This model was developed for the purpose of understanding how people grieve and process a significant loss in their lives. Most people believe that “grief” only applies to the loss of a loved one through death, or the loss of a like relationship, or even to the loss of a beloved pet. But, any significant personal change in circumstances is considered a loss and the change does not always have to be viewed as a negative one. The change just needs to be significant enough to elicit the response of loss.

It is pretty simple to notice that all of us, who have had a considerable investment into this year’s historic election, have experienced a “significant personal change” in our lives that may have caused a cluster of symptoms related to PETS. Our collective and diverse efforts and experiences dissipated soon after November 4th, 2008 and most of us, to some degree, have had some feelings of this loss. Even though the outcome of all our hard work and prayers had a positive result, gaining an understanding that we are suffering these symptoms of PETS, may help us reintegrate ourselves back into our family, friends and the society in which we once belonged.

There are specific symptoms that are identified with the PETS disorder which are identified below:

Numbness (mechanical functioning and social insulation)

Denial (this isn’t happening to me!)

Bargaining (If only, then I will be OK, if …. . )

Depression (moping around, no motivation)

Acceptance (I’m ready for whatever comes)

Reorganization (re-entry into a more ‘normal’ pre-campaign life. )

We may recognize some of the above symptoms as something we are currently experiencing, or have recently experienced over the last many days. The list above is a collection of symptoms related to PETS and if we are able to identify with at least two of these symptoms we may be suffering from PETS.

Let’s examine each of these symptoms separately by starting with the symptom of feeling “numb. ” If we are wondering around our daily life functioning as a mechanical robot and insulating ourselves from any emotions that may want to surface, then we are most likely suffering from the symptom of numbness. Eventually, the numbness will wear off and we may go toward a natural defense mechanism of denial to protect our psyche from the reality that our efforts and work are no longer needed; and the life we had been living for the last year and a half or so, is no more. We may feel some anxiousness as if we are suppose to be doing something but we are bewildered as to what that might be. If this sound like you or any of us, there is a high probability we are suffering from the symptom of denial.

At some point denial will start to dissolve into one of the other symptoms of PETS. Nearly all of us were ecstatic when we heard the announcement that the media projected Barack Obama had won the election. The extremely positive feelings we were having may have lasted for hours or even for days since our ultimate goal had been realized.   Eventually though, we all started to participate in the symptom known as bargaining as another way to cope with PETS.

This symptom translated into a worry of “if only” Obama’s Head Quarters doesn’t shut down the campaign site, we will be able to keep in touch with the many virtual friends we had made. This symptom became quite noticeable when all of us blogger’s started posting a very similar theme of concern. Many of us started to consider the possibility of losing the site and started posting “if only” the Obama Head Quarters could provide an alternative site we would all be “OK” because we would still be able to stay in contact with all of our virtual friends we made during the Obama campaign. The Obama Headquarters must have noticed all of our worried posts and posted a forum that stated they would not be shutting down the site and they also told us that they had made a new sight so that we may continue on our journey of participating in our government “of the people, by the people, and for the people. ”

Even though we had been reassured by Obama Headquarters that they had not forgotten about us, some of us may have started to suffer from some level of depression. This may have started the day after the election or at any time after and co-exist with any of the other symptoms we were experiencing. Although this mild form of depression can be a natural part of the loss process, the symptoms should dissipate in a small period of time. If for some reason, someone continues to be depressed or the feelings of depression dramatically increase, it is vital that we seek professional help immediately.

Eventually we will start to accept this significant change in our life. At first, the symptom of acceptance related to PETS, may be tempered and we may be somewhat aloof about returning to our pre-campaign life. There will still be occasional waves of emotions that can be triggered by any number of experiences, which is very normal and is evidence that we are beginning to heal from what we perceive as a loss. As time passes, we will eventually reorganize our thinking by incorporating our loss with positive memories of the long, hard fought battle of the campaign. We will no longer be sad about this significant change in our lives, as the experiences are now a part of us and the feelings of loss will no longer keep us from functioning as we once did in our pre-campaign lives.

(PETS) is not a clean list of absolutes, it is a wide range of emotions and behaviors that are as individual and varied as those of us who are dealing with the disorder. What is vital to remember, is PETS is not a pervasive condition and will subside as time goes by. Armed with the knowledge of PETS, we can now better know ourselves and others who are going through many symptoms of PETS. Recognizing that we’re not alone in our suffering can increase our empathy and support for others and provide permission for us to go through the process in our own way and in our own time.

By now all of us may be wondering how we can help ourselves through this period of suffering from the PETS disorder. There is really a barrage of activities that can improve our mood and increase our ability to recover quicker. Just like people who suffer from PETS that will have diverse and unique symptoms, there are also as many unique ways of improving our ability to recover from this disorder.

Some thoughts to promote our healing process may be to take a day to pamper ourselves in whatever way that we know how to pamper ourselves. Start making that scrapbook of your campaign experiences. If we choose to get involved in the political process once again, it will be inevitable that we will have that sudden and significant feeling of loss that will occur after re-electing President Obama in 2012. In the meantime, one way we can heal quicker from PETS, would be by collecting all of the memorabilia that has been scattered around our homes that we thought would be cleaned up by know, and start making our scrapbook of memories we promised ourselves we were going to do as soon as this election was over!
