The Mercedes Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” is one of the best sports cars of all time. Named for its unique hinged doors of the roof, the Gullwing was the Enzo of its time: super quick, extremely expensive, and designed to make an entrance. Clark Gable owned, Andy Warhol painted a, Ava Gardner and crashed on the news. No Mercedes sports car, since not even the Mercedes SLR McLaren came close to matching the appeal iconic Gullwing. And now, the Mercedes SLS.
The SLR was a bastard son of a supercar that McLaren engineers, or any Mercedes-Benz really felt his. McLaren designer Gordon Murray of Brabham and McLaren drivers championship Grand Prix, the driving force behind the McLaren F1 supercar, the SLR thought of overweight and overworked, the antithesis of his own philosophy of automotive design. For its part, Mercedes-Benz engineers were uncomfortable with freewheeling McLaren development culture that is evolving rapidly, and skeptical of their methods. The culture shock was incredible car was very quick and robust, but the style a small weird and weird uninvolving to drive.
This perhaps clarifies the new AMG Mercedes SLS, a lightweight, high-tech cutting, 571 HP Super representing the wisdom of some of the most brilliant engineers of the company manufacturing the finest cars in the world. And yes, the butterfly is different.
Like SLS, the SLS is a coupe Mercedes before mid-engine with its 6. 3-liter V-8 (in fact, it’s 6208 cc), located entirely in the first line of the axis of the midline. The engine is based on the M156 V-8 of the SL63 AMG, but has been adapted and primped sufficient to justify a new company name – M159. Mercedes says more than 120 parts and components have been redesigned. The same most notable change, but, is a very dry sump that allows the M159 to snuggle very bottom of its frame. The engine delivers 571 hp at 6800 rpm and 479 lb-ft at 4750 rpm. Some 402 lb-ft is available from 2500 rpm. The engine drives the rear wheels via Mercedes SLS dual clutch transmission new 7-speed, packaged in a box at the rear of the vehicle to help carry forward SLS 48/52 weight distribution between the rear. Engine and transmission are connected by a tube of sand cast aluminum torque, within which a tree is carbon fiber. The transmission offers four modes – Basic, Sport, Sport + and Manual – each with different exchange protocols. The transmission also has a control mode which launches the complete command starts with wheelspin with electronic engine management to prevent stagnation of the line.
