As a child, I felt very embarrassed. . . because I had a fridge, a family and a nice home. I grew up in Jerusalem during the war and most of my friends came from terrible, really dreadful camps in Siberia.

I always felt guilty that. . . I was so lucky. You couldn’t buy anything but my mother was incredible and made everything herself.

I fell into interior design when. . . Ronnie Wood questioned me to design a nightclub for him in Miami in the late Eighties. And I never went back to London.

I always wear. . . black, which is purely out of laziness.

If you’re a designer. . . and working a lot with colour, you don’t wear much colour because it interferes with what you are working on.

Most of my walls are painted. . . a pearl grey colour; it works well with the bright sunshine of Miami. I have odd walls painted in a burnt orange shade.

Grey is. . . fantastic. It changes colour from pink to violet according to the time of day.

Recently I have been bombarded with. . . requests for BIBA designs. My inspiration for my BIBA wallpaper prints really came from the public’s nostalgia.

Wallpaper used to scare me stiff. . . but now it’s simple to place up and peel off like sellotape. You used to have to steam and scrape it off. It’s fantastic for covering ancient and cracked walls.

I was thrilled to. . . work on this project with Graham and Brown. They produce such wonderful printing and colour palettes, and I like the fact that is it produced in the UK.

To have wallpaper in Miami . . . you need to keep the temperature constant with air conditioning. It’s very damp in my home so I can’t have much of it. I wouldn’t be able to open a window or I’d get bubbles. Wallpaper hasn’t yet been developed for this climate.

My top interior advice is. . . have your bedroom in the largest and nicest space in the house. A bedroom should not be tucked away. Don’t save the best room for special occasions.

I will never get rid of. . . my Fifties chair that keeps getting re-upholstered. It’s silver at the moment but I’ve changed the cover of it three or four times. I also adore my huge seahorse doorstop which I picked up in a junk market.

Being caught in a hurricane is. . . an extraordinary thing. You have no control, there is nothing you can do. You don’t know where or how it is going to hit. I was on the beach when hurricane Andrew hit and thought I should head inland to the tomato fields. Then the hurricane hit the tomato fields and the beach was fine. You never know. It’s a gamble. I have a feeling there will be a huge hurricane this year.

Since being hit by hurricane Katrina. . . I’ve went to a higher floor. When the hurricane struck, I was lying in my bed and thinking, my floor is looking very shiny. It was covered in water.

It was scary when. . . my huge window was smashed in. All I want now is really strong windows.

Celebrities are. . . usually disappointing and rarely fascinating because they are so into themselves. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bridget Bardot and Mia Farrow all came to my shop BIBA.

The greatest things in my life are. . . drawing and meeting fascinating people.

I admire. . . minimalism, but I need clutter. I like having different shapes and colours that my eyes will focus on.

I am sick and tired of. . . walking into a room and knowing where everything has come from. In America, everything looks like it’s Armani Casa, all very masculine with a white sofa in the room. It’s mental.

Update your home by. . . moving around photo frames and having furniture on wheels, so you can go it around too.

My all-time favourite project was. . . designing the Marlin hotel in the Eighties for Chris Blackwell. He always gave me a blank canvas to design whatever I wanted.

Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones, Madonna. . . you name it, everyone would party on the rooftop there – until the city banned the parties.

If my house was burning down. . . I’d grab pictures of my son, [my late husband] Fitz, and my passport. Then I’d reckon, ‘fantastic, I can start again’.

Commenting on the latest biometrics of the real estate sector in the country, Anshuman Magazine of CB Richard Ellis (South Asia) said, “In the 1st quarter of 2009, confidence and sentiment was low in the real estate market. The formation of a new government has improved market sentiment, while the global economic decline appears to be bottoming out. This has resulted in an improvement in the velocity of office space off take, especially in the small to medium segments. This is further supported by a substantial decline in rentals in the past one year. ”

Surge in demand for office space is a excellent sign for the economy, and also for the real estate sector. Saket, another emerging market in the NCR, received minimal interest from the prospective office space occupiers. But as a huge supply of office space deluged markets in the last three months, the vacancy level in Saket rose to 35% and rental values corrected by around 22%, to Rs 140 per sq ft per month, over that in January-March 2009 quarter.

At Jasola, another promising SBD in the NCR, rental values fell by around 20%, to Rs 110 per sq ft per month due to a huge supply – 1. 3 million sq ft during the period. Jasola is likely to benefit from a proposed fivestar hotel, multi-level parking facility and Metro-connectivity.

But, rentals in Gurgaon have not declined much in the last three months as they had already fallen substantially in the second half of 2008. In fact, corrections in the rentals have also helped in reviving demand for office space. The report says Gurgaon witnessed an increase in the transaction activity, helped by attractive leasing packages offered by most developers. Companies, the report says, which had postponed their expansion/relocation decisions due to negative sentiment are now ready to take advantage of the softened market and the options available for a phased take-up.

The report says Noida office market suffered heavily as rentals fell by 21%, to Rs 30 per sq ft per month, due to high vacancy levels at around 25-30%. In fact, in the last one year, rentals in Noida dipped by nearly 33%.

But, the positive aspect to all this is that leasing volume has increased by 3-4% in the NCR during the second quarter of 2009. The report says the increasing levels of corporate confidence should help this region and the momentum should be maintained in the second half of the year. But, rentals in the commercial space market will continue to face challenges due to a large supply of new space, and till the time that the global economy gets back onto the path of recovery, opines Magazine. As rental values declined, the capital value of the property also suffered. The fall in the capital values, but, has encouraged an increasing number of companies to explore and evaluate opportunities for an outright buy-out rather than leasing the required space. Though there is an improved level of activity in the sector, the markets are expected to remain soft in the small to medium term.

Biography Celia BirtwellCelia Birtwell is a textile designer. Born in Salford, Lancashire, in 1941, she studied Textile Design in Manchester, where in 1959 she met the fashion designer Ossie Clark, whom she married in 1969.

Theirs was an nearly perfect marriage of style, and their work together defined the era. The collaboration started with a 1966 collection for the Quorum boutique in London, which they shared with the designer Alice Pollock. It was the Clarks who started the modern catwalk show: the previous procession of modelled clothes was place to music, the London glitterati was invited, and the shows became events. Birtwell worked at home designing textiles for Clark, who would use his skill in cutting and understanding of form, together with her knowledge of fabrics and textures to produce haute couture for the emerging ’60s culture. This included work for the Rolling Stones and Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, as well as Pattie Boyd, Marianne Faithfull, Bianca Jagger, Verushka, Paloma Picasso, Talitha Getty and numerous other international celebrities. She has been a muse for the painter David Hockney since 1968, and features in his 1970 painting Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, one of Hockney’s most celebrated and one of the most viewed paintings in the Tate Britain gallery on Millbank. Her first success came with her own take on a 16th century animal print she called ‘Animal Solo’, followed later by the first, and much copied, white on white voile and muslin fabrics. These fabrics are now to be seen in many homes, hotels and public spaces, including Claridge’s and The Lanesbourough Hotels in London; The Grand Hotel, Leeds; The Dubai Hilton, and many more. In 2005 it was announced that she would design clothing for the high street chain Topshop, beginning with Spring/Summer 2006. Her first collection was a huge success, selling out within minutes of the shops opening. In April 2008, Celia designed a limited collection for American fashion retailer Express. In 2008, Millets launched a camping and outdoor footwear and clothing range designed by Celia Birtwell – new lines have also been added to the range for Summer 2009.
