If you want to be even more conspicuous, the Spider model commands values around £6,000 more than its fixed-head sibling. The F1 models were introduced in summer 1998, and these outsold the standard manual-gearbox model towards the end of the car’s life. The standard car retains a classic appeal but, so whilst the F1 models retailed at £5,500 more new, they are worth an additional £4,500- £5,000 on the used market. Left hand drive import values are often 15% less than official UK cars. Insurance is a reassuringly decadent Group 20.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
One of the key philosophies behind modern era Ferraris is increased usage. Chief of the Maranello concern, Luca di Montezemolo, quickly figured out that the best advertisement for Ferrari reliability was for the cars to be seen out on the roads more often. Rather than massively ramp up production, the alternative route was to make the cars more practical and user friendly – in other words to get people to treat their Ferraris like Porsche 911s, exotic but able to handle a daily commute without any histrionics. As such, the F355 has gained an enviable reputation for reliability. Watch out for bottom-book left hand drive versions which may not have been treated to the prescribed level of main dealer tender loving care. If you’re after a GTS model, question the vendor to fit and remove the targa roof, as this panel is very sensitive to warping. It also needs to be stored in a shaded, horizontal position when left off the car.
The clutch mechanisms in the F1 models have been known to give up the ghost within 5,000 miles of hard use. If the car is left in full ‘automatic’ mode, where the transmission changes gear for you, clutch life is reduced significantly if exposed to city driving. Low speed manoeuvring is always slightly jerky in this mode, but if you detect clutch slip, that will require work. Service intervals are every 6,250 miles, so check the service history to check that work has been carried out punctually. Every three years, regardless of mileage covered, the F355 will need its cam belt replaced. This is an engine out job and it’s one of the reasons there are plenty of two and a half and five and a half year ancient cars on the market!
Exhaust manifolds have been known to develop hairline cracks, so listen for any blowing in this area. The only other notable fault that the F355 suffered from is an occasionally leaky cam cover. Make sure the cover is clean before any test drive and inspect afterwards for signs of oil.
REPLACEMENT PARTS
(approx based on a 1998 F355 Berlinetta) Ferrari spares aren’t inexpensive, but nor are they the horrendous expense that many would believe. A pair of front brake pads for the F355 retail at just under £100, and a new clutch kit is around £340. Expect to pay around £250 for a new radiator, and under £300 for a new alternator. A starter motor retails at around £250, whilst a replacement headlamp is £150. All of these prices are around half those of that sensible supercar, the Honda NSX. Makes you reckon, doesn’t it…
ON THE ROAD
The performance credentials of the F355 are obvious. With a top speed of 183mph and a rest to sixty time of 4. 6 seconds, it’s not about to be embarrassed by any souped-up hot hatches. The performance is easily accessible, with a long flowing stream of torque making it possible to reach speeds which would warrant a custodial sentence in less time than it takes to read this sentence. Up the speed to the point where the car is approaching its limit and you’ll need to be a very skilled pilot. The benign feeling disappears and the mid-engined F355 adopts some distinctly mid-engined stereotypes. In other words if you drive it quickly but lazily, without due consideration to the laws of physics, it will spin, and you’ll need to have the reflexes of a racing driver to play catch up. Fortunately to derive massive enjoyment from your prospective buy, you don’t need to continually tread this fine line. The F355 appeals on many subtler levels.
OVERALL
Many lament the fact that the F355 was replaced so early by the more dramatic, if less elegant, 360 Modena. There’s a simple purity to the F355 that seems to have disappeared from Ferrari’s latest offerings that will preserve the car’s classic status. To lay one down like a fine wine is to waste one though. This is one Ferrari that appreciates being taken by the scruff of the neck and given a sound thrashing. As a used buy there are lot of things to look out for, but a properly maintained F355 will provide satisfaction like nothing else. Look for a scrupulously cared for, low mileage car in one of the classic colours and you won’t lose your shirt. But even if you lose shirt, trousers, shoes and everything else, you’ll consider it a honest bargain for the thrill of dancing at that redline, all 380 horsepower at your disposal. With the F355 it’s not a case of whether you can afford to buy one, more a question of can you afford not to?
Enzo Ferrari The Ultimate Supercar
It goes without saying that nearly everyone knows what a Ferrari is. It’s red, it’s quick and it’s certainly a luxury not everyone can have. Every kid, boys and girls, wants to grow up to own a Ferrari. Many man work and toil just to save up enough money to get them a decent Ferrari. But how it all did started?

The Enzo Ferrari was the Ferrari that was named exactly after its owner. This Ferrari was built in the year 2003 and it was built using some of the Formula 1 technologies. To build a car with the best performance, the designers of this Enzo Ferrari also went as far as to use banned Formula 1 technology which is the active and integrated aerodynamics.

F1 car from ferrari F2004 is made for F1 championships and it is its 50s car made for that prestigious competition. That projects, which was known by the code 655 is a new evolution for ferrari concepts, as seen in F2003-GA. Engineers have completly recreated and redesigned the car. Their goal was to acheive the best possible performence received out of the new engine 053 and of the tyres provided by Bridgestone. They also had to change aerodynamics of the car due to recent technical regulations and rules changes and also get the best posiible efficiency of the whole package. Also its weight distribution is improved and the chassis is completely new. Compared to previous model F2003-GA the weight has been reduced and the car´s structure is improved. Also other parts like exhausts, bodyworks and the rear part have been changed and redesigned. The improvem,ent of handling needed rework of front and rear suspension. There are many new materials being used on the new ferrari car. Their purpose is to reduce weight and size. After F1 regulations and modifications, the 053 engine had to be redesigned to meet those new criteria and acheive its optimal reliability and its life have to be twice as long as in the past but with improvede performance. 1994-1999 Ferrari F355 GTS
New for the F355 has been the nomenclature: engine capacity plus number of valves per cylinder: 355 = 3. 5 liters engine capacity and 5 valves per cylinder (until now it was engine capacity + cylinder number).
The F355 GTS (along with the Berlinetta) was the first model in the series, with a Spider version following in 1995. It featured a hard top that could be stowed away behind the seats. The F355 GTS featured a stress-bearing semi-monocoque steel chassis with variable-section, tubular front and rear sub-frames and electronically controlled suspension.
The V8 engine produced a specific power of 109 bhp per liter and, mated to a close-ratio 6-speed gearbox, ensured very high performance. With the F355 everything was about making it quicker and simpler to handle.
The exterior design – signed again by Pininfarina – got extreme aerodynamic features, but in the same time it featured aesthetically rounded edges combined in gorgeous new forms.
At the front was a reverse elliptical grille flanked by indicator lenses and supplementary driving lights, F355’s having been the last Ferrari to feature retractable headlights.
On the sides there was a pair of bare air intakes, while at the rear the rear wings were merged masterfully into a tightly wrapped tail and were improving the improving high-speed stability. The Prancing Horse logo was also dominating the car’s rear.
For the ones who wanted an even more sportier F355 Ferrari was also offering a Fiorano handling package that included a dropped ride-height, firmer springs and dampers and wider track. Besides that customers could also choose between a Challenge meshed rear grille, Sports seats with four-point harnesses and from 1997, the F1 transmission.
Istanbul Circuit Awaits to the F1 Leaders – Ferrari, Mclaren & Bmw
So far in the Formula One 2008 season we are coming close to the end of the first quarter of the races as the Turkish Grand Prix approaches; this will be the fifth race and will take place on May 11th. While the drivers continue to prepare for the 58 laps track the drivers’ standings show current champion Kimi Räikkönen -Ferrari leading the pack with 29 points followed by the Britton Lewis Hamilton-McLaren with 20 points and this year’s surprise driver Robert Kubica-BMW-Sauber in third place. In fourth position we find Ferrari’s Felipe Massa with 18 points and in fifth BMW-Sauber Nick Heidfeld with 16.
In the 2008 team’s standings Ferrari shows the majority of the points with a total of 47 followed by BMW-Sauber with 35 and in third place – most unexpected – McLaren team with 34 points. It is very clear that the McLaren leaders have become aware of their existing situation as they have not had excellent performances and the vehicles’ technology needs to match first then surpass that of Ferrari which is the one setting the paste this season.
McLaren’s top driver; Lewis Hamilton has recognized that he has made terrible choices lately which had led to a visible hole from which he hopes he can get out soon enough. Despite his latest races he is at the number two position but the gap gets larger by the minute. Additionally, his McLaren teammate has proved he is very capable of extraordinary achievements and could eventually overcome Hamilton in the near future. Nevertheless, that has been set on hold due to Kovalainen’s incident at the Catalunya Grand Prix which indeed silenced most if not all at McLaren. Kovalainen was just behind the two Ferrari drivers when he hit the tyre wall on the 22nd lap. The Finn was taken to a nearby hospital and he is now looking to return for the next race in Istanbul.
McLaren’s chief executive Ron Dennis has stated that “The precise cause or causes of his accident are not yet known,”. “Our data shows evidence of a sudden tyre deflation shortly before the accident, but it is still too early to identify what triggered that deflation other than to say that it is likely to have been the result of a wheel rim failure. Regardless of these recent events McLaren is still a top three contender in the race for the championship.
On the other hand, Ferrari’s Räikkönen continues to have certain control of the Formula One tracks especially after the Spanish Grand Prix he added his second triumph of the season and the 17th of his career overall. His teammate the Brazilian Felipe Massa continues his support and keeps growing strong lap by lap.
And finally there is the solid BMW-Sauber driver’s presentation of Robert Kubica who started fourth in the grid and finished the race in the same position. The 23-year-ancient Polish has impressed us this season; he is very confident and a very serious driver and it is a fact his vehicle is providing the driver with the assurance required to lead in the race as he is very closely doing.
Istanbul will soon be opening its doors to these incredible drivers as they start to arrive in Turkey for their driving tests. We sure expect to see more action as the competition gets tougher and the point gap grows apart from their hopes to win the F1 championship.
F1 – Ferrari & Bmw Take the Top 3 Spots in Bahrain
This past weekend we witnessed the Ferrari team take once more the lead; as the Brazilian driver Felipe Massa won the third race of the Formula One calendar – the Bahrain Grand Prix. Massa is Ferrari’s second driver but he counts with an extend background and plenty of experience which helped out to obtain the first points of the new season.
Another impressive performance was that of BMW-Sauber Polish leading driver Robert Kubica who started the race in pole position but eventually lost spots and finished third in the overall race. BMW boss Mario Theissen made a odd remark regarding their new hard-line approach as it is clearly reflected on the constructors’ championship standings – currently in first place – basically the first time in the team’s history as well as their three consecutive podium appearances in the last three competitions.
Despite Kubica’s his third position arrival and fourth for team mate Heidfeld they gathered enough points to be placed in first position just one point from team Ferrari.
“It’s right we are ahead of schedule – which concerns me a bit because if we go on like this we will get criticised for third or fourth place in future!” joked Theissen.
On the other hand, the alarms have been going off at the McLaren team due to the recent agony leading driver Lewis Hamilton has had to place up with. First there was his mistake at the start of the race followed by a distraction coalition into Renault ‘s vehicle driven by the Spaniard Fernando Alonso; as the two drivers speeded up out of turn three, Hamilton came close to Alonso’s back axle and rode up on his right rear tyre losing its front wing. A very unfortunate fate for Mercedes which doomed Hamilton’s chance and transformed it into the worst race end; thirteenth position.
In the view of some; Alonso had deliberately lifted the accelerator but even Hamilton admitted that if there was anyone to blame was him not Alonso. Yet; Renault’s director of engineering Pat Symonds holds data to show the Spaniard driver had not incorrect doing in the matter.
After the eminent blow the 23-year-ancient Briton had not many choices but to continue and end his battle only that this time the gap between him and his Ferrari rivals Raikkonen and Massa was deeper as it meant many precious championship points.
Bahrain has been tough on McLaren and Hamilton who is used to error free performances; perhaps it is time to reassess the dynamics of the team as the championship is becoming a three way battle; in which BMW Sauber is showing sufficient pace to overcome McLaren and fight for more wins.
Nevertheless, we are still three weeks from the following F1 race in Spain and the Spanish racetracks have always been McLaren’s territory and we know that from this point forward each race will be more hard especially now that the lines have been crossed and the speed knights’ motivations are in full gear.
