In fact the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is one of the last right natural circuits for F1 races with some part of the track making use of the public highway. The latest information but, is that the local authorities are performing some maintenance and repair work in Spa Francorchamps. Hence, the Belgian Grand Prix will not feature this year in the Formula One World Championship. But the race is very much expected to be there in the year 2007
Another entertaining event in Spa is the Francofolies de Spa. This is the most vital musical event of the French speaking populace in Belgium. Originally, the cars, bikes and trucks started from Paris, France, to Dakar in Senegal but varying political situations in the countries the rally passes through has meant the route has changed several times. Because the Dakar Rally terrain is a superb natural testing ground, many manufacturers like Land Rover, Toyota, Mercedes and Pinzgauer, as well as Citroen and even Porsche have chosen to participate. Nissan and Mitsubishi also take the rally very seriously indeed. In fact, 2008 will see Mitsubishi defending its 8 consecutive victories in what has been acknowledged as the toughest endurance race on the planet. The 2008 event is being looked upon as a source of technical feedback from the 2008 Dakar Pajero Evolution in terms of durability and endurance as this will influence the all-new range of high performance clean diesel engines slated for 2009.

Mitsubishi’s chief rival manufacturer is Volkswagen, and the German team has readied its Tdi-powered Race Touareg 2s. VW will field four cars but Jutta Kleinschmidt, the first woman to have won the Dakar Rally (in a VW) will not be with them. VW is hoping to become the first manufacturer to win the Dakar with Diesel power, just like sister company Audi has done at Le Mans for the past two years. The route for the 2008 Dakar Rally is 9,273km long, of which 5,736km will be treacherous special stages. The rally starts in Lisbon on the 5th of January and is scheduled to reach Dakar on the 20th of January after wending its way through Spain, Morocco & Mauritania. During the closing stages of the race, Narain also soaked up an enormous amount of pressure from Jonny Reid of New Zealand to end the 45-lap feature race just half a second ahead – his first major win since his Formula 3 days in the UK several years ago. Having proven that he still has the ability to win, Narain feels he’s due another shot at F1. At the end of the day, this is a fantastic win for team India. It’s sure to be a huge morale booster for a team that is still developing and getting better all the time – hopefully it’s also sign of many more wins to come. On the whole, you’ve got to say, it’s looking relatively excellent for the Indian racing scene at the moment.

The stock A4 is a excellent-looking car – the new one even more so. It does the job it’s designed for, and stylishly too. The shortened front body overhang makes it look purposeful, while the longer bonnet and wheelbase lend the impression of being a large saloon. With a Cd value of 0. 27, it’s aerodynamically efficient too, and can easily take a volume of 480 liters of luggage to boot. The new A4 is offered in India with a choice of two engines, 3. 2FSI petrol and a 2. 0TDi diesel. Both engines are direct-injection types.  Depending on engine spec, you can choose from a range of 16, 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels. Optional xenon plus headlights make for improved visibility at night. The Audi A4 DTM on the other hand is a very different beast all together. If the standard car can be termed a cat, the DTM version would probably be a saber-toothed tiger, and that’s why it’s so menacingly successful on the track. It’s about performance, power and handling. It’s the fourth-generation Audi A4 DTM, and is known as the “R14” internally at Audi Sport. The DTM version is built around a steel DTM Touring Car space frame made of aerospace industry grade steel, with the driver’s safety cell being made out of very strong carbon fiber composite, as used in F1. As accidents tend to happen at a much higher speed on the racetrack, for the driver’s safety, the front and rear crash structures are also made of the same material. It’s 4800 mm long, 1850mm wide and 1200mm small. The standard A4 is, in comparison, 4586mm long, 1772mm wide and 1427mm tall.  The engine of the DTM A4 is not available in the road car that you drive in India – it’s a normally aspirated (no turbo or supercharging) 4000cc V8 engine with a 90deg angle between the cylinder banks. It breathes through four valves per cylinder, and despite the mandatory intake air restrictors, still develops approximately 460bhp of power and over 370 lb/ft of torque. It’s a rear-wheel-drive car and power to the rear wheels is transmitted via a 3-plate carbon-fiber clutch and a sequential 6-speed sport gearbox. To keep the power delivery honest, the A4 DTM has an adjustable limited-slip plate differential and constant velocity sliding type tripod universal joint shafts. Aerodynamics plays a huge part in car racing and it’s also the case in DTM. As in F1, when a part falls off (and parts can fall off in DTM as the cars go body-to-body into a corner trying to muscle each other off) the car’s performance is compromised. But like an iceberg, there is more aerodynamic trickery under the car than can be seen – along the underbody of the car, air passages, slots and steps abound so that air pressure under the car can be harnessed to make the A4 DTM stick to the road like a leach clings to skin. The cockpit of a DTM car is very different too. While the standard car’s cockpit is given to creature comforts, a DTM driver’s cockpit, or workplace if you like, is a stark contrast due to its multitude of gear shift lights, rev counter, indication of engaged gear, lap timer, speedometer, etc. Switches, buttons, digital displays, as well as traditional levers and pedals characterize an A4 DTM cockpit. Did I mention the buttons? You have buttons for the radio (for pit to car communication, not AIR FM Rainbow) and for activating the speed limiter in the pit lane. More buttons for selecting headlight high beam and activating the drinks supply. The left paddle behind the steering wheel actuates brake valves for the parking brake. The right hand side paddle actuates brake caliper cooling! The sequential gearbox is really manually operated. There is no AC, so adjustable inlets for fresh air into the cockpit have been provided for the driver. Then there are even more buttons, for adjusting brake balance, the show brightness, and, handy after a crash, the fire extinguisher. You have the main electric switch, with ignition and starter buttons on the right and a hazard warning light system for when the car stalls on the grid. Once the buttons have been memorized, there is the rest of the A4 DTM. It has a servo-helped rack and pinion steering, front and rear independent double-wishbone suspension, a pushrod system with spring/damper units, adjustable gas pressurized dampers and a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system that actuates light alloy brake calipers on ventilated carbon brake discs at both front and rear. The driver can adjust the brake balance to his or her liking. The A4 DTM runs on Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres, 265/660 R18s mounted on 10x18inch aluminum forged rims at the front, and 280/660 R18s mounted on 11x18in rims at the rear. With the driver included, the total weight of the car is 1,050kgs. Obviously, such a purpose-built racer will never see Indian roads, except perhaps during a blue moon. The whole exercise is a demonstration of Audi being ‘Vorsprung durch Technique’ or ‘ahead thanks to the use of technology,’ which describes Audi’s effort in DTM perfectly – they’re leading the series.

The compact Fabia won’t be the only new offering from Skoda in the new year. An all-new version of their flagship luxury sedan, the Superb, is expected to make its world debut at the Geneva auto show in March, and thereafter hit the Indian streets before the end of the year. Like the existing Superb, which was based on the previous generation Volkswagen Passat platform, the new one will be based on a stretched version of the latest Passat chassis. This new car will undoubtedly share some of the same qualities as the existing model, which include rear seat space and comfort rivaling the very best luxury sedans at only a fraction of the price. This image reveals a slightly more svelte and fascinating look as well. Nevertheless, they’ll have to work hard to differentiate the new Superb from the Passat, which has only recently debuted in the Indian market.

The Lotus name is an iconic one in the history of motorsport. Lotus was founded in 1952 by Colin Chapman arguably one of the greatest automotive engineers ever. They have since won the F1 world championship seven times.

Chapman strongly believed that weight is the enemy of performance. This philosophy is still very much adhered to by the company. Many sports car makers claim to follow this belief, but none with quite the same purity and sense of purpose as Lotus.

Their success in the past hasn’t guaranteed a smooth ride in the company’s recent history but. Lotus has changed hands a number of times in the recent past, but is currently in excellent shape with majority ownership in the hands of Proton – the Malaysian national carmaker has owned 80% of Lotus since 1996. The company is still headquartered at Norfolk in the UK but.

Off late, Lotus have been looking to expand their presence in the global market, and are currently present in Thailand, Korea and of course Malaysia as well. India is next on the radar. Lotus is on the lookout for dealers and plans to launch their famed Elise model in 18 months time.

The Elise was launched in 1996 – a car that’s been a huge success and changed the fortunes of the company. The car has as fiberglass body on top of a very unique chassis made of extruded aluminum, which is glued and riveted together to form not only an extremely light, but also stiff structure.

The Elise has a 1. 8 litre, 4 cylinder, mid-mounted Toyota engine that produces 190bhp, which may not sound like a fantastic deal but it accelerates from 0-100km/h in under 5 seconds. Moreover, since its debut, it’s been widely regarded as the best handling car in the world. This is a pure sports car in every sense – so much so that, until recently, basic creature comforts like carpets and a CD player were optional extras.

Frankly, the Elise is more suited to a racetrack than the daily grind, especially on Indian roads. But then, we could well have an F1 track in the NCR by 2010 – at which time an Elise would be a handy tool indeed.

The Pirelli calendar is one that’s keenly awaited by all and sundry involved with automotive matters and brilliant photography, but ‘sundry’ rarely ever gets to own a copy. Even so, there is always keen interest in both the models, the photographer/s shooting this exclusive calendar, and how the models are depicted in the calendar.

One of the most striking, and yet subtle, calendars from this tyre company came several years ago when the tyre tread pattern was tastefully depicted as an element of the whole image. This time around, the thirty-fifth, Pirelli has a more commercial motive behind the choice of models – Pirelli’s increased presence in China with the opening of a new tyre plant. So, along with the inclusion of Chinese models in the calendar, the theme of the calendar focuses on Shanghai, along with its teahouses and former colonial areas.

The photographer is Patrick Demarchelier, originally from the small French sea town of Le Havre. He is possibly most well known as being Princess Diana’s official photographer – historic because he was the first non-Brit to photograph the royal family. This is Demarchelier second time as the Pirelli calendar photographer – the first was in 2005 in Rio de Janeiro in exotic, sultry Brazil.

The 2008 edition has (disappointingly for those expecting a skin show) 23 portraits, the odd number due to August having just one. The selected models include Agyness Deane and Lily Donaldson (UK), Doutzen Kroes (the Netherlands), Catherine Mc Neil and Gemma Ward (Australia), Sasha Pivovarova (Russia), Coco Rocha (Ireland) and Caroline Trentini (Brazil). The Chinese beauties are Mo Wan Dan, Du Juan and Maggie Cheung, the latter is an actress known for her roles in Chinese and English films like Police Tale, Super Cop, Actress, Chinese Box and others.

Du Juan, whose name means both the Azalea flower and the Cuckoo bird, was the first Asian model to grace the cover of French Vogue. Mo Wandan was born in Guangdong Province, China. She trained in track and field, but quit after injury. After she participated in, and won, the China Model Star Contest in 2004, she was signed on by a modeling agency. You’ve just won the lottery, or suddenly learned a fantastic inheritance. Whatever the reason – the vital thing is that now you’re rich. But there’s a catch, there always is.
