Many residents of Monaco rent out their terraces and balconies for the Grand Prix, but these don’t come cheap. Prices typically range from about 8000 euro to 140,000 euro for the four days of the event including the practice and qualifying sessions starting on 22nd May. Try looking on ebay or in newspapers such as the Nice Monaco Matin and Herald Tribune.
A cheaper way of watching the Monaco Grand Prix can be to book a meal at one of the restaurants and hotels lining the race circuit. Here you can delight in lunch on the terrace while watching Lewis Hamilton speeding past in his McLaren. Expect to pay anything between around 90 euro to 500 euro for lunch with a view on race day.
Several of the luxury hotels Monaco is well-known for have views of the Grand Prix circuit. Best known of all is probably the fabulous five star Hotel de Paris Monte Carlo in Casino Square. This luxury hotel has only 191 rooms so you’ll have to book well in advance if you want to delight in the opulence and brilliant service that has attracted many celebrities.
No small break in Monaco is complete without a trip to the world well-known Monte Carlo Casino. Whether gambling is your thing or you just want to indulge in some celebrity spotting, the Casino is a fantastic place for a night out offering slots, roulette, craps, blackjack and poker plus bars and restaurants and a cabaret.
As well as numerous bars and nighclubs, Monte Carlo also has a thriving cultural scene. Well loved choices for a night out are the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Opera of Monte Carlo, and Les Ballets de Monte Carlo.
One of the many celebrities with a pad in Monaco is easyJet founder, Stelios Haji-Ioannou. Lots of the F1 drivers also have a home here. Stelios’ low cost airline easyJet is just one of the airlines offering flights to Nice airport, most convenient airport for Monaco.
Race goers travelling from the UK have a choice of flights to Nice. easyJet glide there from Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and Edinburgh airports. From Heathrow airport there’s the choice of BA (which also flies from Gatwick) and bmi. Passengers from Manchester airport can glide with Jet2. com, while bmibaby serves Birmingham airport and East Midlands airport. Budget airline Flyglobespan offers flights from Glasgow airport to Nice. From Nice airport a helicopter can whizz you into Monte Carlo in less than 10 minutes.
Another well loved way to travel to Monaco is by boat or ship. The floating gin palaces – or luxury motoryachts such as Sunseekers and Princess yachts – are a familiar sight in the harbour at Monte Carlo on race day. If you can’t quite stretch to one of these there is a boat service from the nearby port of St Jean Cap Ferrat to Monte Carlo.
Monaco is also a well loved port of call for many Mediterranean cruises. Several cruise lines visit Monaco including Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea Cruises and Crystal Cruises.
It’s probably not a excellent thought to travel to Monaco by road during the Grand Prix event, but. Access is very hard and there is no car parking available. Better to leave the driving to Hamilton, Alonso, Massa and the boys.

Physical activity that is governed by rules, customs and competition offer more possibilities than ever before. Prince Albert is personally interested in the quest for Peace on Earth. “Peace and Sport” is a new international organization based in Monaco. “Even more than an education, sport is mixing people for a better understanding and thus contributes to a better world,” said Prince Albert.

Private businesses, governments and international sports organizations will come together to incorporate the fundamental values of sport in rebuilding peace and global reconciliation around the world. Monte-Carlo Bay & Resort hotel in Monaco hosted the first international event. “Peace and Sport” officially started December 5th, 2007 under the High Patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.
The first invitation of “Peace and Sport” has been exceedingly positive and widely accepted by governments and heads of state. A well respected US magazine recently claimed Monaco has the most overpriced real estate in the world, claiming the rental returns as part of their figures meant the tax haven’s property costs were unduly high.
In response a Monaco internet site says the American magazine are incorrect, and have forgotten why Monaco’s property prices are high in the first place.
‘The error they made was comparing Monaco with places like Rome, Warsaw, Los Angeles and Vancouver, and they also overestimated closing costs. While admittedly high in Monaco at around 11 per cent, it’s not common to be 20 per cent that their research was based on. ‘
The comparison of 50 financial centres assumed the property was not a main residence and looked at rental returns – another error when calculating Monaco’s property prices according to the Monaco internet guide.
‘By law in Monaco rentals are a minimum of one year, so it’s obvious that rental returns are going to be less than places where weekly and six monthly rentals are possible. To gain residency in Monaco via renting the residency office needs evidence of a twelve month contract, so Monaco is in a unique position when compared to other leading financial centres. ‘
‘There is a shortage of available property in Monaco and high demand that shows no sign of slowing down – given all these factors we just reckon the US magazine’s analysis of the Monaco real estate scene has been done without taking local factors into consideration. ‘
Typical property prices in Monaco at the moment include a second floor studio apartment at 1,100,000 Euros, a one bedroom apartment in Monte Carlo at 2,150,000 Euros, and a three bedroom two bathroom apartment at 5,500,000 Euros.
As well as buying a property, to gain residency in Monaco a bank account needs to be opened in the Principality, with account opening deposits varying between 100,000 and 500,000 Euros.
One thing that could place the brake on the number of Brits looking to go to Monaco was announced after the magazine’s claims about Monaco real estate prices were published.
The amount of time British tax exiles can spend in their home country is being limited by the British government, and it could impact the British economy, claim a company who specialise in tax haven property and residency.
Up until now a British taxpayer could avoid paying income tax by taking residency in a tax haven such as Andorra or Monaco, and be allowed to spend 90 days a year in Britain before falling foul of the Iland Revenue. Importantly both the day of arrival and departure into the UK didn’t count as a day.
So technically, a tax exile living in Andorra could drive to Barcelona airport for a 7am flight to London, and given the hour’s time difference between Spain and the UK, be comfortably in an office working by lunchtime.
Equally, the same tax exile could leave the London office at 6pm Friday for Barcelona en route to Andorra – and importantly those five days in the UK would count only as three of their ninety day allowance as the day travelling to and from the UK aren’t counted. Which allowed business men and women to commute from the tax havens of Andorra and Monaco thirty weeks a year. Some would do Monday to Thursday and could do that virtually all year and still stay on the right side of the British tax man.

Monaco is opening a new facility for the upkeep and repairs of the world’s megayachts, and enhances Monaco’s already fabled image.
The shipyard, which has taken two years to build, will be the largest megayacht facility in the Mediterranean and is an impressive 35,000 square metres capable of taking fourteen 40 to 80 metre yachts.
Bearing in mind the size and weight of the yachts, the new facility can hoist and transfer one in half an hour.
The owners of the shipyard have invested 45 million Euros to make sure it is state of the art, and as well as major repairs can do painting and full servicing as part of its services.
The number of megayachts has increased dramatically in recent years, and Monaco has been quick to ensure that the wealthy owners, often nouveau riche, see her as in the same light as ancient money and the established European and US wealthy families, who frequent Monaco and the Monte Carlo casino.
Monaco ensured the attention of the yacht owners by cleverly staging the annual Monaco Yacht Show, the only one of its type, specialising in Megayachts, held in the principality each September.
As well as the legendary Monte Carlo casino, Monaco is a tax haven and home to the Monaco Grand Prix, F1′s most prestigious race in their calendar.
For a country with a long tradition of welcoming the wealthy, it comes as a surprise to many that Monaco is also in the forefront of the battle to save the environment.

The environment campaign started shortly after Prince Albert became Sovereign with the Monaco Yacht Show 2005, held each September, with the event successfully becoming carbon neutral. To encourage the thousands who commute to Monaco every day from neighbouring France and Italy the railway station is one of the best in Europe, with frequent and reliable services.
‘For those who work in Monte Carlo and travel in from Nice and her surrounding villages five days a week, it’s both cheaper and quicker to take the train – the trains are modern and comfortable and it’s rare for seats not to be available even during the rush hour’, claim a Monaco travel guide, ‘Once people are in Monaco the local transport service is equally quick and efficient. Virtually all routes are well plotted and simple to know, and the most you have to wait for a bus is ten minutes, often it’s just a couple of minutes – which isn’t exactly a hardship given the weather in Monte Carlo!’
With many major companies and the banks in Monaco also looking to see how they can improve their own environmental records the business community view the steps as prudent ones.
The routes are plotted to incorporate tourist needs, with many passing by the Hotel de Paris in Casino Square and the Columbus in Fontvieille, two of the best known and well loved Monaco hotels. Fares have been reduced to one Euro, making public transport in Monaco among the lowest priced, comfortable and frequent in Europe.
With the overall aim to increase bus usage by 20 per cent, the Principality is also funding five new duplex trains with a thirty per cent increase in train services, and in an innovative attempt to persuade commuters to leave their cars at home will provide free electric cycles at car park schemes.
‘The one time of year you might see quick cars being encouraged is of course for the Monaco Grand Prix in May’, conclude the guide for Monaco, ‘But overall it’s Prince Albert who will be able to claim the winners rostrum among European leaders for the environment. ‘

A fantastic racetrack can turn a town into a must see destination. If that town happens to combine motorsports and the weather of southern France, then you have Monaco. The town of Monaco is actual a small country of its own. It is most well-known for decadent living and the race that occurs in the summer of every year. In June, the whole world watches as the most technologically advanced cars on the planet line up to race through the city on the same streets that were being walked on just days earlier. I have been to Monaco and can tell you that the city and the track are just the beginning of what is a spectacular city.

The best way to enter the city if from the west, this way you can come into the town from above and see the bay and the whole cityscape before you. Also, because you are coming into town this way, you will find many more parking areas. It is best to find the first parking garage away from the city center that you can. The whole city has a series of elevators that you can take instead of walking up and down thousands of stairs. This will save your feet for the journey ahead as you go to explore the track and the town itself.

Once you get down to the harbor, be sure to cross to the other side of the street closest to the harbor. This area with the red pavement is the pit lane on race weekend and behind you, on the street, you can see the grid where the race cars line up before the start of the race. Following the flow of traffic will bring you to the first corner of Sainte Devote. This is a sharp right hand turn that goes immediately uphill. The steep walk will lead up toward the Casino and all those poker tables they have and give you a commanding view of all the ships in the harbor and the city proper. This is one of the fastest parts of the course as the cars accelerate up the hill at full throttle and have to take a sharp left turn at the top of the hill. You will notice that the turn is blind and the drivers must negotiate this turn at about 100 mph.

This turn leads directly into Casino Square and heads past the sculpture/mirror thing in the middle and then the cars dive down to the right and head downhill toward the sharpest turn in all of Formula One; the hairpin. From here, you continue downhill and to the right where the cars take another sharp right turn and head straight into the tunnel.

This tunnel doesn’t seem all that dark, but you have to remember that you are not doing over 150 mph either and your eyes have time to adjust. If you are going from bright sunlight into a tunnel and then back into sunlight again in about 10 seconds, your eyes will barely have time to blink. This is the fastest part of the track and as you come out into the sunlight on the other side, you will head down the hill toward the harbor.

Here, you can make a sharp left and then a right again to get onto the actual harbor road. You will be standing next to multi-million dollar yachts while walking on the same track where multi-million dollar race cars drive at over 100 mph. Follow this harbor road around the Olympic swimming pool until you come to a restaurant called Rascasse. Take a hard right around the restaurant until you come to a statue of a Mercedes W196 and Stirling Moss. From here, you will want to turn right and head down the front straight. This completes one lap of the Monaco Formula One track. Now all you have to do is 77 more of those at high speed and you will be in the same boat as Formula One drivers. The course is demanding, scary and very gorgeous to look at. It is well worth the trip to this historic principality.

CHICAGO – The 2009 Monaco Grand Prix was poised to be one of the most challenging and exciting races on this year’s Formula One circuit-and an unmatched opportunity for corporate hospitality, says THG North America CEO Jon Stromberg.

The 2007 F1 Grand Prix season is underway, and in the first race in Melbourne Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen secured his position on the winners’ podium after driving his Ferrari to victory, with new British driver Lewis Hamilton securing third position in his first ever race, and an impressive second a fortnight later in Malaysia.
Changes both on and off the track could have a dramatic affect on this season’s podium finishes, with races expected to be closer than in recent seasons, which have seen a decline in the sport.
Seven times World Champion Michael Schumacher retired from racing at the end of the 2006 season, and his departure has increased the possibility of no individual driver dominating for some time to come.
The ace German driver won his championships in 1994 and 1995, and between 2000 and 2004 won five championships in a row.
Schumacher won some 91 F1 races in his career, amassed more pole positions than any other driver in the history of the Grand Prix’s and over 70 competitive fastest laps.
Off the track Bridgestone has become the sole supplier of tyres, and some rule changes have been introduced which should cut the number of tyre changes during the race, and add some extra excitement in overtaking and braking manoeuvres. This will really come to the fore at the Monaco Grand Prix where overtaking is notoriously hard.
A new island is to be built off Monaco, and while the winning bid hasn’t been chose upon yet, there is a possibility of the circuit changing in some years to come which might allow for more overtaking places, but locals are more interested at the moment to see whether the cost of housing might be affected.
Monaco Island
With property prices in Monaco the highest in Europe and one bedroom apartments after closing costs starting at around a million Euros, longer term the shortage of property in Monaco will be helped by the new island being built off Monte Carlo.
It’s thought unlikely that the new island to be built off Monaco will reduce prices much overall though, despite the increase in the number of property units available as Monaco property is always in demand.
Monaco estate agents believe that most new apartments will be sold to investors off plot well in advance of any building work starting.
‘The problem with property in Monaco is not the lack of buyers’, they say, ‘but more the lack of excellent properties for buyers to choose from. Hopefully the new island will address that. Everyone in Monaco is aware of how vital the environment is thanks to Prince Albert’s initiatives in pushing it up the political agenda, and any new developments will be low rise. With the excellent weather in Monaco expect to see plenty of solar panels on the roofs to make the buildings energy efficient’.
It is possible that the new island will be incorporated into future Monaco Grand Prix, which could give more overtaking opportunities.
During his first year Prince Albert has successfully made the people of Monaco aware of global warming and taken steps to combat it, and for his second year and beyond he is likely to be campaigning just as hard at home and abroad on the issue he believes in so much.

The highlight of the F1 Grand Prix season, the Monaco Grand Prix, has been won by Spanish driver Fernando Alonso in a Renault.

It was Alonso’s first victory at Monaco, and extended his lead in the drivers championship to 21 points.

Second place went to Juan Pablo Montoya, who won in 2004 and third to Britain’s David Coulthard.

Always the most exciting race of the year, and the only one where the drivers are on normal streets instead of a purpose built circuit, controversy started early this year with Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari having been judged to be in violations of the rules on the practise day, and having start the race from the back of the field.

But in right Schumacher style, it didn’t stop him making his way up to fifth place.

Speaking after the race, winner Alonso said:

‘The race was quite emotional from the start,’ said Alonso, dedicating the win to Michelin tyres chief Edouard Michelin, who died on Friday. ‘Kimi place some pressure on me, which was quite tough, but it was excellent in the end. At Monaco you really have to keep your concentration and push to the limit all the time. It’s a race that I place a cross against on my calendar at the start of the year, so now I have it. It’s fantastic for the team and me. ‘

Last year’s winner Kimi Raikkonen tracked Alonso closely up to their first pit stops, with the Williams never more than a couple of seconds behind.

The Renault driver was able to maintain his lead thanks to stopping two laps later than the McLaren, but Raikkonen wasted no time in getting back on to his rival’s tail.

Alonso’s lap times dropped off dramatically early in the second stint, allowing Webber and Raikkonen’s team-mate Montoya to close right up.

But the world champion speeded up as they hit heavy traffic from backmarkers halfway through the race, and only Raikkonen was able to stay with him.

Australian Mark Webber, though, was still within six seconds of the leaders – and still looking in contention for victory – when his engine failed as he headed into the first corner, Ste Devote, on lap 48.

He pulled over to the side of the track just after the corner with flames licking from the back of the Williams.

Race officials deployed the safety car to give them time to go the Williams from a perilous place, and all the teams pulled their drivers in for their final pit stops.

Alonso just managed to make it out of the pits in front of Raikkonen, who appeared set for a final charge for victory before smoke started pouring from his McLaren leaving the Loews hairpin on lap 50 while the safety car was still on the track.

That left Montoya in second from Honda’s Rubens Barrichello.

Brazilian Barrichello then lost the final podium position to Jarno Trulli after being given a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane, only for the Italian to retire with five laps to go and promote Coulthard, who is a Monte Carlo resident and part owner of a one of the hotels in Monaco.

The Scot, who took Red Bull’s first F1 podium, was not far ahead of Barrichello in the closing laps, but Barrichello had to concentrate on holding off a charge from Schumacher.

The seven-time champion closed in on his former team-mate at more than a second a lap, and was right on the Honda’s tail with two laps to go, but the Brazilian was equal to the challenge and held the German off.

Schumacher had spent a frustrating race attempting to pick his way through backmarkers following his penalty for deliberately stopping on the track during qualifying.

He made up ground quickly in the opening laps after choosing to start from the pit lane with a full fuel load, but came to a halt in 16th place on lap three when he came up behind Jenson Button’s Honda.

But Button was able to fend off the Ferrari only until lap 20, and Schumacher shot off to join the back of another queue.

The Ferrari had the pace to battle for victory, and combined with his need for only a single stop, that place him sixth after the safety car’s intervention, which became fifth when Trulli retired.

Button spent a lonely race never threatening to break into the top 10 and eventually finished 11th.

Spain’s Fernando Alonso and Britain’s Lewis Hamilton achieved first and second for McLaren in the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix.
Alonso started from pole position and achieved the fastest lap time, and for most of the 78 lap race kept a three or four second lead over team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Monaco was Alonso’s 17th Formula 1 victory.
With five races in this year’s F1 Championship now gone, Spaniard Alonso and Brit Lewis Hamilton share the lead in the drivers’ championship with 38 points each, with the next two races scheduled for Canada and the US.
In his first F1 season, Lewis Hamilton has now achieved five podium finishes from five races, extending his record winning run. And although tipped by some commentators to win this year’s Monaco GP, Alonso’s fluent driving kept him at bay throughout the race.
Fellow Brits – and Monte Carlo residents – Jensen Button and David Coulthard finished the race outside of the points and well down the field, a disappointing result particularly for previous winner Coulthard, who was on the podium to receive his third place trophy in last year’s Monaco GP.
David Coulthard is part owner of the Columbus Hotel, in the Fontvieille district of Monaco.
Robert Kubica in a BMW, who like Hamilton was making his debut at Monaco, achieved an impressive fifth position, ahead of team-mate Nick Heidfield.
Appropriately named American Scott Speed was another driver who will leave Monaco pleased, having climbed from 18th on the grid to end 9th.

Speaking after the race Alonso said ‘It has been a fantastic weekend, no doubt, and to score this hat trick of pole, fastest lap and win is something very special and even more here in Monaco. I loved very much today’s race, with a perfect car all through the race. It was so excellent to drive such a nice car for 78 laps and win at the end. ‘
Lewis Hamilton commented, ‘I knew we were both extremely quick, so I could only apply pressure, but he’s a two-time world champion and he doesn’t really make mistakes. ‘
The Grand Prix is 77 laps around the narrow, winding streets of Monte Carlo, making the Monaco Grand Prix the most exciting in the world, with small room for driver error.
Since the first Grand Prix on April 14 1929, organised by Monte Carlo resident and founding president of the Automobile Club de Monaco Antony Noghes, the average fastest speed has risen from 50mph (80 kph) to 88mph (143 kph).
The 2008 Monaco Grand Prix will be held on Sunday 25 May.

Europe’s Monaco Grand Prix has been voted as the favourite destination by British people as the ultimate sports event to visit.
No other sporting event comes near to being able to combine the year round sophistication and glamour of Monte Carlo with the heady excitement of F1′s premier annual race on the streets of Monaco. The interest in F1 has been in decline in recent years in the UK, and it is a surprise perhaps that the Monaco Grand Prix has managed to retain her legendary status.
Part of the decline has been since television coverage in the UK switched from the BBC to ITV, with ITV running advertisements during the race.
But the largest factor for the declining interest of F1 in the UK has been the marked lack of success in the sport for British drivers, with Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell the last two Britons to consistently win races and championships.
This year has seen the most open championship in some years, following the retirement of ace German driver Michael Schumacher. Seven times World Champion Michael Schumacher retired from racing at the end of the 2006 season, and his departure has increased the possibility of no individual driver dominating for some time to come.
The ace German driver won his championships in 1994 and 1995, and between 2000 and 2004 won five championships in a row.

Each May, Monaco hosts its own Grand Prix race. It’s one of the most prestigious stops on the Grand Prix tour with a rich history behind it. The first race ran in 1929. What an F1 circuit it has been this year. It started in March of 2007 in Australia and finished in October in Brazil. The circuit passed through the Middle East, Europe, North America, Japan and China. Time spent in Monaco, after it’s all said and done, seems like what the doctor ordered.
This small country, with just over 32,000 people, is the second smallest independent state after the Vatican. According to former F1 driver, Johnny Herbert of Britain, most Grand Prix drivers live in Fontvieille. This is prime real estate; a fabricated harbour built in the 1970′s in Monaco. The country itself is roughly the size of New York City’s Central Park.
Although the primary reason for the well-paid Grand Prix drivers to live here is taxes – the lack thereof- there has to be more to it than that. If it were just that, they’d all live in Switzerland or the Bahamas or offshore on a tugboat (albeit a very luxurious one).
You have to believe there’s more to it than the monetary savings. You would reckon the racing history of this principality lures drivers in; Grand Prix drivers having racing oil in their blood. Sure, they also have a taste for the finer things in life which Monaco offers. Nevertheless, there’s a history here. The greats of F1′s of the past have left their stamp in Monaco.
The Circuit de Monaco holds onto the memories of greats like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Jackie Stewart. These were stalwarts of the sport who won on the course multiple times. It also doesn’t forget the likes of Niki Lauda, Jody Sheckter and all the others who have won here.

Monaco is preparing for the 2007 Grand Prix, with some noticeable changes compared to previous years.
Always a social highlight, with celebrities and top business people packing into the principality for the weekend, the 2007 Grand Prix will be the first for many years without previous winner and leading driver Michael Schumacher taking part.
Significantly the F1 sponsors are changing too, with tobacco companies no longer the main sponsors of the teams.
In their place step finance companies such as ING, the Dutch financial services company, who are sponsoring the Renault team. ING will also be sponsoring the Australian Grand Prix.
In addition to ING other finance and banking companies stepping into the Monaco Grand Prix are the Spanish bank Santander, who recently bought Britain’s Abbey National and the Royal Bank of Scotland who will be involved with the Williams team.
‘Not so long ago Monaco’s Grand Prix weekend was full of tobacco company executives with the cars and advertising hoardings reflecting that,’ comment a Monaco travel guide, ‘But with EU and other government legislation stopping that the world of Formula One have had to look elsewhere for sponsorship – and they have done that very successfully’.
The major change in the race itself will be the absence of former world champion Michael Schumacher, who retired at the end of this season. Schumacher was involved in several incidents at the Monaco Grand Prix over the years, making the event an even more colourful one for spectactors.
Monaco Economy
Along with the banking and finance sectors sponsoring the teams at the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix, tourism also plays a major part in contributing to Monaco’s vibrant economy, with many visitors making day trips from neighbouring France and Italy at other times of the year.
‘The Monaco Grand Prix plays a part of course’, comment YourMonaco, ‘but many tourists want to see what it is really like to be in Monte Carlo, the millionaire’s playground. Monaco hotels delight in high occupation levels despite the day trippers though, as so many business people are in Monaco for two or three days’.
Property prices in Monaco are among the highest in the world, with one bedroom apartments after closing costs starting at around a million Euros.
It’s thought unlikely that the new island to be built off Monaco will reduce prices much overall despite the increase in the number of property units available as Monaco property is always in demand.
A Monaco property company believe that most new apartments will be sold to investors off plot well in advance of any building work starting.
‘The problem with property in Monaco is not the lack of buyers’, they say, ‘but more the lack of excellent properties for buyers to choose from. Hopefully the new island will address that. Everyone in Monaco is aware of how vital the environment is thanks to Prince Albert’s initiatives in pushing it up the political agenda, and any new developments will be low rise.
