Having grown up in New England, my favorite time of year is undoubtedly in the fall. Unless you live in the region, is a feeling that is hard to clarify. There is something in the air – a crispy, nearly – signs that something is coming. The tops of trees in a palace of incredible orange, red and yellow, and the smell of home runs in the breeze. And another excellent thing comes with the fall – Halloween. As a child, of course, I was excited about Trick or Treat candy collection as much as I could, but when I left this time, I did not like Halloween again until I was ancient enough to start throwing parties.

Suddenly dress was fun again (even if alcohol is a factor that enjoyment.) Honestly, I can not imagine living elsewhere during this time of year. Being a fan of horror movies and all things that go bump, now’s the time of year when you can really appreciate all you have to offer. American Movie Classics typically runs a program called block “Fearfest” (before “Monster Fest”) where they show marathons of horror movies, including Friday the 13th saga, some films of the series Halloween and other gems of the 80s .

There is something stupid and dependence of these movies when they come on TV. As terrible as most of them are not to be missed. Before when it was called Monster Fest “, which is used to switch to older films, but now tend to show a lot of crap B-movies of recent years. But, there is something comforting about coming home and flipping on AMC and I was wondering what I will show below. For those of you still young at heart (like me) ABC Family show “13 Days of Halloween”, nearly two full weeks of Halloween-oriented programming for children and families. They have run this marathon more than 10 years and I am sure this year will be the exception.

Usually show favorite songs of the family as Hocus Pocus, Casper, Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Poltergeist, and The Haunted Mansion, plus the fan favorite show host haunted sites alarming Earth exploration. “These are things to do with their children (even if they sometimes show films like The Sixth Sense could be a bit too scary for children.) Sometimes I’ll place on ABC Family in the background just for ‘pure atmosphere to all those Halloween movies. Now, I’m not worried of horror movies that I did when I was a kid, but I like the nostalgia.

And as sad as I was going to see (seriously, it feels like just started), I’m really looking forward to the changing climate and foliage. I also hope to make a trip to Salem, MA this year. Nothing sums up the fall in New England quite like Salem during Halloween. ABC Family is also responsible for another marathon Houses – “25 Days of Christmas.” Now I’ll admit I’m not a fan of snow and ice, but I like the weeks in December led to my favorite holiday. Yes, this seems like a lot of buildup for a day, but the accumulation is the most fun. Shopping for gifts of holiday music, radio – all these things that remind us that it is a special time of year comes around only once. And despite the commercialization and occasional stress, Christmas is the festival that really makes me reckon of a simpler time, when I could believe in things that are not humanly possible.

As someone who did not want to leave my children as long as possible, always makes me a small warm and fuzzy inside to see all the Christmas special on television, especially the ones I used to look like a child (ie “Christmas Special Garfield’s” and “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”, two of my favorites). Start programming the first week of December and runs until Christmas Day through. Listen, if we all could quit trying to convince people that internet network marketing is somehow the miracle business that is so different that the rules don’t apply; people would accept it for what it is and make informed decisions (not emotional ones) that will enable them to withstand the inevitable disappointments and setbacks with some resolve and perseverance. This isn’t meant to be a negative article. It’s meant to be a truthful article. There are a ton of success tales and fantastic things about Network Marketing programs. I’ll talk about that in other articles, but we all need to tone down the hype and just tell the truth. You know what, it could end up setting this industry free from the bonds of the con-men. Wouldn’t that be kinda cool. Just imagine where we could go without those shackles.

On January 1, 2009, Major League Baseball launched its long-awaited Major League Baseball Network (MLBN) on major cable broadcast providers throughout U. S. television markets.

Hailed by MLB itself as a boon to its continued growth, the MLBN hopes to garner $150–$200 million in additional revenue in just its first year of distribution.

And to that end, the MLBN starts right off the bat with a built-in cushion of an instant 50 million television household subscribers, or about one third of the cable market share. The MLBN sets itself apart from the oft-cited NFL Network, now in place in 42 million television households after four years of sometimes hideous legal wrangling and ongoing negotiations with cable broadcasters. And NBA TV, with 15 million subscribers to date, has seen primarily slow growth.

But the reason that the MLBN has been able to delight in a compatible arrangement with cable broadcasters is that it gave up a share of its equity in order to reach that goal. The MLBN is a majority 67% stakeholder, while DirecTV has a 16. 5% interest and Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Cox Communications collectively own a 16. 5% share.

The logic in sharing its equity according to MLB CEO and President Bob DuPuy is that, “It would take an dreadfully long time to grow to the value that being in 50 million homes is immediately going to provide. It makes sense from an economic standpoint and plus, these companies are partners that will help grow the game, and at the end of the day, that’s to everybody’s benefit, as well. ” But is it to the fans’ benefit?

Initially attracting the eyeballs of potential viewers with access to the MLBN in the midst of winter, with the NFL playoffs in full throttle and with NCAA basketball heating up, will be its first challenge.

Until the MLB regular season gets underway, there will be no live game coverage on the MLBN, and the Hot Stove season thus far has been less than exciting. Moreover, ESPN has had a stranglehold over MLB coverage the past two decades. And the FOX Network, which airs live games and, more recently, MLB Advanced Media coverage, which provides live TV coverage over the Internet, will make the MLBN market penetration no simple task.

The template presently in place for the MLBN until the regular season gets underway will be talking heads and historic footage. The initial night featured recently recovered footage of Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series. But the network will carry only 26 regular games for the entire 162-game season, given its broadcast contract commitments already in place.

But most importantly for the average baseball fan from a consumer’s standpoint is the way in which the MLBN’s advance marketing was described. MLB repeatedly stated that it would be available to all expanded basic cable subscribers. But it depends upon how they defined the word “basic. ” Clearly, it was not defined before January 1st.

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig appeared on camera on the MLBN just prior to its initial 6:00 PM EST broadcast on January 1st. And he stated at that time that, “As has been widely reported, the MLB Network is not carried as a specialized sports tier, but does require customers to subscribe to digital basic cable or the equivalent. ”

Therefore, many customers with expanded basic cable who do not require set-top boxes currently and who do not subscribe to a far more expensive digital tier were less than enthused when they tried to tune to the MLBN on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, the MLBN contentedly has made it publicly known that it is not charging cable providers the 85 cents per subscriber that the NFL Network demanded, as it is only charging broadcasters 25 cents per subscriber. But, in order for a fan to get the MLBN, it requires a new expensive digital tier package and rental of a set-top box, which costs an additional $7. 00-$10. 00 per month.

When MLB negotiated with TBS to air the entirety of all first-round MLB 2008 playoff series, it was the first time in MLB and television broadcasting history that postseason coverage was not available on over-the-air TV for fans. And it was just a harbinger of things to come.

Soon, over-the-air TV will no longer be accessible simply by turning on a set without a converter box accompanied by a newfangled co-axial roof antenna, come February 17, 2009. But, cable broadcaster Comcast is already taking it a step further. It had originally required, with no honest warning to its analog customers or those known as the real expanded basic cable customers, that they would be losing all television access unless they rented a digital set-top box by December 31, 2008. Fortunately, the FCC interceded and Comcast agreed to delay that deadline until March 1, 2009.

The cable industry is using the Digital Television Transition as a convenient excuse to either extort or confuse customers into paying for more expensive services in an economy which is seeing its most severe meltdown in 70 years. But, MLB is enjoying the ride.

It is not necessarily MLB’s fault for not allowing the MLBN to air for analog basic expanded cable customers. But, they could have been less deceptive in their advertising and maybe even held back its launch to such time when they could offer a more full blown schedule. After all, right baseball fanatics may jeopardize their finances to upgrade their service at this time only to be disappointed by a network which is in its infancy and may be filled with a lot of fluff and advertising.

Another incidental to note in the business of cable broadcasting is that in addition to the current nearly 20 million subscribers to analog basic expanded cable, there are approximately an additional 80 million subscribers that have analog basic expanded cable in other rooms of the house, in addition to their digital packages, say in the living room.

The conclusion, therefore, is that a excellent ploy would have been for the MLBN to initially roll out on basic expanded cable as promised, and then ramp it up to a digital tier as either the season got going or in 2010 when more viewers would have had a better chance of making a more intelligent choice on what type of television service is indeed best for them. Unfortunately, MLB is simply piling on and taking advantage of the situation.

And although MLB always makes sure to say it acts in the best interest of its fans, most of us know differently.

Once again it was performance night on ‘American Idol’. If you want to get a small scoop of the show you can read on and get a glimpse of the gala performances. The season 9 of the show is turning out to be a close call as the contenders are being tested with the songs from Elvis Presley. Before the show, the contenders were sent to Adam Lambert for a brief mentoring. With his guidance, the performers poured out the best in them with their versions of Elvis tunes.

We can start with Crystal Bowersox. She has already proved herself as the most potential winner of the title this season. Working on Lambert’s advice, she played on electric guitar in exchange of acoustic guitar. But some DISH TV viewers feel that she is starting to become dull. Do doubt, she sang the song ‘saved’ from Elvis brilliantly but she lacks the vitality and the vigor expected from a million dollar performer! She sang the song standing before the mike and a guitar in hand just like the previous shows. It’s no weird that this time too she got praise for her singing but these too are seemingly dull. It’s sound like a broken record repeatedly being played. Fantastic, incredible, solid are word being poured on her by judges. But whatever be their decisions, some DISH Network viewers are criticizing that she is brilliant to hear but not an exciting performer to watch for.

Next comes Andrew Garcia. He was one of the bottom three contenders of the last week along with Michael Lynche and Aaron Kelley. Some of the viewers of DISH TV believes he will be in the bottom 3 this week too if not voted off. He sang ‘hound dog’ of Elvis but his version of the song was not all touchy. Only Ellen showered some praise on her saying she ‘liked the change’. But another judge Simon said it was a bone idle performance.

Tim Urban has been improving consistently and this week is not an exception. Though he never seems to come close to Bowersox or Casey James, this week’s performance of him proved many of the DISH TV viewers incorrect. The song ‘Can’t Help Falling in Like’ was perfectly sung and the touchy voice of him made all emotional. Kara said this to be the best of his performances and Simon told him that he is going from 0 to hero.

The performance of Lee DeWyze was excellent. Even the judges loved it. But some of the DISH Network viewers feel if he does not bring something new and fresh small chance for him to be saved for the coming episodes.

Aaron Kelley is the next to come. The 16 year ancient was on the bottom 3 but had got enough votes to secure his position for a week. But some viewers on Satellite TV still believe that he sounds like a kid trying to play the grown up part on the show. His version of the song ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ was not satisfactory. Some DISH TV viewers also want him to be voted off the next week.

Siobhan Magnus overwhelmed all the judges with her incredible vocal. But in spite of her remarkable voice her version of the song ‘Suspicious Minds’ didn’t work. Satellite TV viewers suggest that she has to work hard if she wants to stay in the race

After last week’s huge surprise of Michael’s being voted off and then being saved by the judges, all eyes were upon him. He performed up to the expectation and his version of the song ‘In the Ghetto’ was just incredible! Even Ellen said, “I’m glad we saved you”.

Last week the performance of Katie Stevens was fantastic but this week she just got it all incorrect. Her version of the song ‘Baby, what you want me to do’ was hardly any song. Rather it was a much like a loud noise as if jazz band is blaring in the background. Simon described the song as ‘loud and annoying’.

Casey James performed nicely on yesterday’s show. His version of the song ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’ was just perfect. But, some DISH Network viewers believe that it was perfect but predictable.

With Michael Lynche being saved by the judges, the result night will see two eliminations! Based on the performance night show, the predications for the bottom 3 can be Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelley. Having grown up in New England, my favorite time of year is undoubtedly the fall. Unless you live in the area, it’s a feeling that is hard to clarify. Suddenly, dressing up in costumes was fun again (albeit the alcohol is a factor in that enjoyment. ) Honestly, I can’t imagine living anywhere else during this time of year. Being a fan of horror movies and all the things that go bump, this is the time of year when I can really appreciate all there is to offer. American Movie Classics usually runs a block of programming called “Fearfest” (formerly “Monster Fest”) where they show marathons of horror movies, including the Friday the 13th saga, some movies from the Halloween series, and other gems from the 80′s.

There’s something silly and addicting about these movies when they come on TV. As terrible as most of them are, I just can’t help but watch. Back when this was called “Monster Fest”, they used to skew towards the older movies; now they tend to show a lot of crappy B-movies from the last few years. Still, there’s something comforting about coming home and flipping on AMC and wondering what they’ll show next. For those of you still young at heart (like me) ABC Family shows the “13 Days of Halloween”, nearly a full two weeks of Halloween programming geared towards kids and families. They have been running this marathon for over 10 years now and I’m sure this year will be no exception.

They usually show such family favorites as Hocus Pocus, Casper, Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Poltergeist, and The Haunted Mansion, plus the fan-favorite haunted house exploration series “Scariest Places on Earth. ” These are fantastic to watch with your kids (though they do sometimes show movies such as The Sixth Sense that might be a small too spooky for the small ones. ) Sometimes I’ll place on ABC Family in the background just for the sheer atmosphere that all these Halloween movies bring. Now, I don’t get frightened of horror movies like I used to when I was a kid, but I do delight in the nostalgia.

And as sad as I am to see summer go (seriously, it feels like it just started), I am certainly looking forward to the change in the weather and the foliage. I hope to also make a trip to Salem, MA this year. Nothing else sums up fall in New England quite like Salem at Halloween time. ABC Family is also responsible for another holiday marathon – “25 Days of Christmas. ” Now I’ll admit, I am not a fan of the snow and ice, but I do like the weeks in December leading up to my favorite holiday. Yes it does seem to be a lot of buildup for ONE day, but the buildup is the fun part. Shopping for gifts, holiday music on the radio – all of these things that remind us that it’s a special time of the year that only comes around once. And despite the commercialism and occasional stress, Christmas is the one holiday that really makes me reflect on simpler times, when I could believe in things that weren’t humanly possible.

As someone who wanted to hold on to my childhood for as long as possible, it always makes me a small warm and fuzzy inside to see all the Christmas specials on TV, especially the ones that I used to watch when I was a kid (namely “Garfield’s Christmas Special” and “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”, two of my favorites). They start the programming on the first week of December and continue up through Christmas Day. Baseball fans all around the country are looking forward to this weekend’s 4 game series in the Bronx between New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. That is because it’s one of the largest rivalries in all of professional sports, and the saga continues starting tonight. The Red Sox, on the other hand, are looking to take advantage of playing their annual nemesis four straight games at Yankee Stadium where they’ve recently loved some degeree of success.

The Red Sox fully realize that if they aren’t able to earn at least a split with the Yanks this weekend, then they’ll really lose more ground to the Bronx Bombers, and then that would possibly open the door to the surging Tampa Bay Rays to really slide into second place in the divison, dropping the Sox to third place. But, if the Red Sox succeed in winning at least 3 games in the Huge Apple this weekend, then they will close the gap to only 1/2 game, and a sweep of the four games would then find the Red Sox in first place on Sunday night, after the game which fans everywhere can watch on ESPN’s Sunday Night Game of the Week on Dish Network.
