It is safe to say that the Caparo T1 road car has not had the simplest development period. Firstly there was the suspension failure whilst giving passenger laps to assembled journalists, then Jason Plato was terribly burned on the hands and face whilst testing the car for Fifth Gear. Finally, to top it all, Jeremy Clarkson called the car undriveable at low speeds during its debut on the Top Gear television programme.
It is not surprising that such stinging criticism has hurt Caparo, but in their defence these early tests used pre-production prototype cars, and with hindsight Caparo would have really waited a small longer before letting journalists loose with their new vehicle.
The Caparo T1 has been called a Formula 1 car for the road, but as Ferrari learned back in 1995 when it used the same phrase to launch its F50 model, making such a road car is simpler said than done. But anyone who encountered a T1 on the public road with its enormous rear wing, open cockpit and overhead air box could be forgiven for thinking they were really at the Monaco Grand Prix.
The key to the Caparo’s success is its lightweight design, as the lighter you can make a car the better it will accelerate, stop and handle. Certainly this was the mantra of Gordon Murray when he was designing the Mclaren F1 and that supercar tipped the scales at over 1000kg, whereas in contrast the Caparo weighs just 670kg.
The combination of low weight and a 3. 5 litre V8 engine that is capable of producing 610bhp gives the T1 an all vital power to weigh ratio of 922 bhp per ton, which easily trumps the Bugatti Veyron, but the Veyron will certainly carry you in significantly more style and comfort. By contrast, whilst the Caparo T1 does have two seats, the passenger side is very cramped and set slightly back from the driver’s side so you will certainly need to choose your passenger wisely.
When it comes to the performance figures they are nothing small of mind blowing, with the car wearing slick tyres it will reach 60 in 2. 5 seconds and hit a top speed of 205 mph, with a low downforce set up on the front and rear wings. These figures are all the more astonishing when you consider that the T1 has all of the requisite features including wing mirrors, number plates, indicator and car headlight bulbs, that allow it to be used completely legally on public roads.
The Caparo T1 is a tremendous engineering achievement that pushes the design and construction boundaries, and just like any pioneer when you are pushing the limits accidents can and do happen. With the full customer versions of the T1 now on sale its safe to say that Caparo has ironed out those early teething troubles, but with a price tag of £225,500 don’t expected to see one on your high street any time soon.
The Porsche 911 GT3 has been described as brilliance to spare, the problem is with a machine of this capability is thatl there isn’t anywhere within the United Kingdom road network that you would be able to legitimately take advantage of its raw unsurpassed power.
Consider the following, this car can comfortably hit 114 mph in third gear and not break sweat. Its performance is brutal with 415bhp pushing 1375kg this is a car waiting to explode out on to the roads. This car has possibly one of the most powerful accelerations off any road machine available.
Start to push this car and there is no forced induction to bolster the mid- range. OK the gearing is a small different from standard 911’s but it is the apparent ease with which it basically blows other supposedly quick cars off the road whilst still only in third gear that is possibly the most impressive of all of its features.
Accelerating in third gear (god I sound like an obsessive) in the 911 GT3 has memorably been described as “impersonating a leopard undergoing root canal treatment with a poorly administered anaesthetic” and you will hit comfortably 114mph and then you realise that there are three other gears to follow until technically (because we all know that it is not legally possible within the UK) you hit what Porsche claims is the 911’s top speed of 192 mph.
At this point the scenery flashing past the car starts to blur and you realize that the problem with trying to get to grips with this car is the fact that the conventional road network within the United Kingdom cannot cope.
Unless you are either given solitary access to an F1 circuit like Silverstone or Brands Hatch you are not even going to be able to come close to appreciating what this beast can do and even then it takes real experience to be able to master this car at speed. Any fool can hit the accelerator and go. Staying alive to tell the tale, now that requires experience.
If we sum up the 911 GT3 RS, it is going to set you back at least £94. 280 (or $192,000) and for that you get a car that will go from 0-60 in 4. 2 seconds and supposedly tops out at 192 mph though other testers have claimed even in excess of that figure. Funnily enough for car of this power, driving around conventional roads it’s not really too much of a problem, in fact in fact it makes the act of restraint quite a virtue that is key to enjoying the suppressed power that lies within. Self preservation and common sense quickly remind you that this is not a car whereby you hammer your way through the gears trying to impress the boy racer in the car behind you.

The world of F1 is cutthroat and can be considered a constant struggle to stay afloat, particularly for the smaller teams. This week saw the unfortunate withdrawal of the Super Aguri team after what has been a hard season financially. Obviously the merchandise and sponsorship deals were not forthcoming and the team has been purely keeping their head above water for the last few months.
From today the team will be no more; doubtless, the drivers, fans, sponsors and merchandise producers affiliated with the team will be disheartened by the news, as will the entire F1 fraternity. Nobody likes to see teams going down the pan, whether competitors or not. The complex way F1 is funded through deals with sponsors, backers and merchandise producers has not been able to keep this team going. Unfortunately in the world of F1, this is a common plight for the smaller teams, especially when not backed by a major car manufacturer.
Super Aguri team Principal Aguri Suzuki was recorded as saying that his dream of owning an F1 team had become a reality. After securing sponsorship and merchandise deals and applying for a grid position in 2005, he has managed to last 2 years at the pinnacle of motor sport. As of today unfortunately, the F1 team will be stopping all racing activities. For many but the situation was unsurprising, Super Aguri took twenty two races to finally place in the points, finishing ninth in 2007. It was not certain but that the team would experience difficulties; it was the loss of a major sponsor that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
This breach of contract by partner SS United Oil and Gas resulted in serious deficiencies financially, that despite other sponsors and merchandise producer’s efforts could not be rectified. If it had not been for the help of Honda, the team may have capitulated to the financial pressures sooner. Even this help but was not enough to keep this small F1 team going indefinitely; at some point this bowing to the financial pressure was inevitable.
With the loss of such a predominant financial backer the team’s future was seriously called into question. If it had not been for Honda it is doubtful that the team would have been able to compete in Spain a few weekends ago. The team had plotted to secure a deal with German automotive firm Weigl AG, it was hoped that this would be the lifeline that would keep Super Aguri afloat. The deal never materialised but and the small team were left stranded with no more money to carry on operating.
Sadly for Anthony Davidson this leaves him without a drive for the rest of the season, whether he will be able to regain an F1 drive is questionable, but support for the British driver will not wan, the fans had been impressed by his performances this season. The team’s other driver Takuma Sato may have less difficulty in finding another drive; he has experienced a fantastic level of support from Honda and had been part of Aguri purely because Honda wanted to see him on the F1 grid. Although with understated performances this season, even Honda’s support may be faltering.
Aguri Suzuki went further in his statement to the F1 fraternity to thank Honda and Bridgestone as well as the other sponsors and merchandise suppliers. The advice and support had been invaluable to the team that lacked the experience and resources of the larger car manufacturer backed teams. He also thanked the two drivers, Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato, it was with their skill that the team was able to place in the finishes and development that the team needed. Naturally, his greatest thanks was reserved for the many Super Aguri fans around the world, it is doubtless they will be miserable to witness this capitulation.
