Monaco always attracts the world’s largest celebrities with its natural beauty and refined elegance. When the excitement of Formula One racing hits the principality’s streets at the end of May, top models as well as Hollywood stars and starlets come out in full force to delight in the most glamorous race of the year; the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Grand Prix and Fashion Unite event has recently become a fixture on the race calendar. The 2007 event brought together supermodels and socialites to raise funds for the Tereza Maxova Foundation, which benefits orphanages in the Czech Republic. The event featured designs by Isabell Kristensen, well-known for her red carpet creations. Actress Bai Ling attended the event, as did German model Lena Gehrke and Czech beauty Petra Nemcova.
Well-known Hollywood directors Luc Besson and George Lucas are Formula One regulars. The 2007 Grand Prix also brought Jude Law to Monaco to delight in the action of this year’s racing season.
Besson typically attends most Formula One events with his friend Jean Todt, director of the Ferrari team. This year in Monaco, he played tour guide to French actor Jean Reno. The two worked together on films like Le Grand Bleu and Nikita.
Quentin Tarantino recently attended the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. When questioned for his thoughts on racing, Tarantino said, “”I like all this pageantry that happens beforehand. The guys are trying to get ready to do a race, but then they have all this carnival just before their do-or-die time. ”
While the Grand Prix hasn’t had a serious accident in years, the event certainly does get some of its allure from the danger of racing on narrow streets with tight turns and changing elevations.
The race is held each year on the Circuit de Monaco, which consists of the city streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine and includes the well-known harbour. It takes six weeks to build the circuit and three weeks after the event to tear it down.
Only two drivers in the history of the race have ever crashed into the harbour, with the most well-known of the two being Alberto Ascari in 1955. Ascari survived the crash into the water after missing a chicane. The other driver, Paul Hawkins of Australia, finished up in the water in 1965. Hawkins crashed his Lotus and flew over the wall, after which he swam away from the accident to safety.
The race was founded in 1929 by Anthony Noghes, with the permission of Prince Louis II and sponsorship from the Automobile Club de Monaco. It has become one of the most vital races in the world, alongside the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The three races are collectively known as the Triple Crown.
The history and drama of the race is intriguing, as is the opulence of its fans. The rich and well-known are treated like royals amongst the gorgeous cars in majestic Monaco at the end of May, tempting many top models as well as Hollywood’s brightest stars and starlets to take a trip to see the Grand Prix.

It seems that all countries, with the exception of England seem to go through phases of producing a ‘generation’ of talent. Let’s take Spain as an example and look at 5 different leading and hugely well loved sports.

Football – After many years on the fringe of the fantastic European clubs and the recent domination of the French football team, Spain finally proved their critics incorrect by winning the Euro 2008 championship and giving them fantastic hope and confidence for the 2010 World Cup.

Moto GP – Spain always seems to produce a host of fabulous riders the most recent of which include Daniel Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and Julian Simon. In the 2010 season it looks as if the crash and subsequent injury to Valentino Rossi may have handed Jorge Lorenzo the best shot at the world championship.

Maybe the reason so many excellent sports stars are being produced in Spain is the access and affordability of sporting facilities and the encouragement they get from an early school age. In addition Spain still has a ruling that sporting events of national interest must be shown on free terrestrial television.

German automaker Mercedes-Benz has close ties with Formula One and he hoped that the popularity of drivers of sport for their television commercials. The TV spot above include Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso and former McLaren driver and world champion Mika Hakkinen. In the view of Mercedes-Benz TV, Hamilton and Alonso showed that the races are in your blood. The business concept is to show that two Formula One drivers themselves as friendly rivals. The largest and most luminous star known is VY Canis Majoris, a red hypergiant located in the constellation Canis Major. At between 1,800 and 2,100 solar radii (approximately 2,750,000,000km across), it is a single star nearly 5,000 light years away from the Earth, and quite probably the largest star in our galaxy. To gain some perspective of its size, if the Earth were to be represented by a sphere one centimetre in diameter, the Sun would be represented as a sphere with a diameter of 109 centimetres, at a distance of 117 meters. At these scales, VY Canis Majoris would have a diameter of approximately two kilometres! Of course, this is all very fascinating information, and will certainly entertain your friends, but a star’s size is intrinsically involved in determining attributes such as its luminosity, colour, temperature and lifespan. Place simply, when it comes to stars, size really does matter! Generally speaking, the larger a star the greater its mass, and hence the more its gravity. High mass stars with stronger gravity have greater pressure in their cores, greater pressure leads to higher temperatures and these lead to much quicker nuclear fusion reactions, whereby the star’s hydrogen fuel is converted into helium, with the release of massive amounts of energy. This energy makes a radiation pressure, and while gravity tries to contract the star, this radiation pressure simultaneously tries to expand it — the result is a stable hydrostatic equilibrium which can last for millions, if not billions of years. But, once a star runs out of hydrogen fuel and starts to fuse helium into even heavier elements, this equilibrium cannot continue, and it won’t be long before the star is no longer what could be regarded as a normal stellar main sequence object. Because high mass stars burn their fuel much, much quicker due to the greater core pressure caused by gravity, they live relatively small lives — they live quick and die young as supernovae — they are the James Dean of the stellar zoo. A star such as Rigel, in the constellation of Orion, a hot blue supergiant with a diameter sixty times that of the Sun, has a mass of seventeen times that of our star, and hence 40,000 times its luminosity. Under its massive core pressure, its nuclear fusion reactions will race away, it will quickly run out of fuel, and hence it will live for only 20 or 30 million years. Our Sun on the other hand has enough hydrogen fuel to burn at its leisurely pace for ten billion years or more — small red dwarfs with lower pressure and lower temperatures will undergo nuclear fusion for much longer. With smaller mass and less gravity, Proxima Centauri for example will live for at least 20 to 30 billion years. An fascinating consequence of a star’s size and temperature is its brightness. Generally speaking, a larger mass star main sequence star, having a higher temperature will be bluer in colour, while a smaller, cooler star will be redder — the inverse of the colour conventions used on our devices warning of hot or cold temperatures! So the next time you stare at brilliant blue white Rigel, white Sirus, or yellow Arcturus with your telescope or binoculars, you’re looking at stars in decreasing masses and sizes.
