Muslims come from different backgrounds. In America, we have Muslim immigrants, who face a range of problems such as xenophobia. In the U.S. in recent times there has been a growing hostility toward immigrants, and are often wrongly accused of all socio-economic problems we face in the U.S., and are harassed by it. And we have a large population of African-American Muslims, and face additional obstacles because being part of a racial minority in the United States have had to deal with the problems of racism, discrimination, segregation and the consequences of slavery. To this, add religious discrimination and gender discrimination, and these are some of the challenges we often face.

But in addition, Muslim women often face discrimination from their own Muslim community. Some of the most serious problems facing American Muslim women: domestic violence, abuse of the laws of divorce and child custody, abuse of the system of polygamy, and the isolation and the exclusion of various aspects of Muslim life. Victims of domestic violence have small support from the Muslim community and the support it receives, although well intentioned, often disorganized and inefficient. The lives of victims of domestic violence often in danger and your only recourse is to go to non-Muslims who are prepared to deal with this problem – which is also a pressing problem in the larger American society as well. So we are faced with problems of domestic violence. The tale of Khadija and Fatima shows the abuse of the system of polygamy in Islam.

Khadija and Fatima

Khadija Omar married under the laws of the United States and the state in which he lived, and under Islamic law. Omar later took a second wife, Fatima. But, Omar and Fatima could not marry under U.S. law because she was married to Khadija, and polygamy is illegal in the United States. So Omar is married to Fatima, in virtue of an – alleged – Islamic tradition, which includes only a marriage proposal and acceptance of this proposal in front of witnesses. Fatima, the second wife, who was a convert to Islam, learned mostly from Islam Omar and he convinced her that she need not be married under U.S. law – Islam would be sufficient to protect their rights. And while this is right in the theoretical sense, in the United States, we have no framework to enforce that

Omar had children by his two wives. – His first wife, Khadija, and his second wife, Fatima. The two failed marriages. And Omar Khadija – the first marriage – divorced. Omar refused to pay any support Khadija or your children through that marriage. But Khadija Omar could take the U.S. courts and obtain child support and alimony. In the general election for the first time their strength was only 22 years (4. 4%) in the House. The representation of women has increased steadily in the coming general elections to 34 (6. 7%) in the third Lok Sabha. But the trend has reversed over the next three elections. The representation of women in the 6th Lok Sabha was a mere 19 (3. 4%), the lowest in history. Subsequent elections generally trended upward, except for the 1989 elections, when the number of women MPs dropped significantly to 27 of 44 in the last Lok Sabha. But after the 1991 elections, the number of women parliamentarians has increased steadily until it touched 44 in the 1998 elections, or 8. 07 and 49 per cent in 1999, the highest in history.
