Released in 2002 on Lava Records, it exploded onto the memorable songs such as “Passage in Time” and “Over Seasons” and featured a tasty mix of aggressive punk rock, groovy reggae and suave Latin influences.

The listener is lulled in by “Papa” and then Jason DeVore rips out soaring vocal melody on “Passage in Time”. Song goes into blazing tempo. Starts with a quick tempo and goes into a groovy ska interlude proceeded by a bluesy interplay between the bass and guitar. Five minutes into the record and we’re taken through a couple of genres already.

Third tune is “Lying Awake” which doesn’t stop the tempo and goes into overdrive. The fantastic thing about Authority Zero is that they never sacrifice their catchy hooks and melodic singing for the sole reason blazing punk rock. Even with the underlying thrash beat present, Jason DeVore keeps the melody (and harmonies!) soaring while Bill Marcks and Jeremy Wood keep the rhythm section pulsating. The pace doesn’t let up with my personal favourite is “Everyday”. Starts with a fascinating riff and then just explodes all over the speakers. The catchy as hell verses and even catchier then hell chorus will stick in your head for a very extensive duration. Finally, they let up and cool you with their very Spanishy song, “One More Minute”. The vocal talent of vocalist is on show here and the guitar solo bridge also features a killer bassline by Bill Marcks.

What I like most Authority Zero is to assimilate all their influences and do it well. A plethora bands try to get all creative and try to “not sound like every other band and have a distinct sound” but end up sounding like complete crap. In addition, their lyrics are downright clever and well thought out. And some very motivational (but not in a Krystal Meyers kinda way). Songs like “Lying Awake” :

Excellent stuff, especially in today’s emo-ridden world where every teenager’s into wrist slitting (if they killed themselves it’s okay but they just do some lame mutilation. They are able to infuse positive punk messages into their infectious tunes without sounding overbearing.

Other memorable tunes on this record are “La Surf” and “Excellent Ol’ Days” but don’t reckon that the others are just filler tracks. You are sure to delight in this 42. 51 minutes of this punk rock treat. Please kill Simple Plot.
